POLLUTION CONTROL AND WASTE DISPOSAL

Pollution control and waste disposal are now under strict regulation at federal, state, and local levels. Enforcement of these regulations has also become more effective. Increased public awareness and media coverage make it difficult for today s polluter to hide behind a screen of ignorance. 

Since pollution control and waste disposal problems vary greatly from one laboratory to another, they have to be handled on a custom basis. The laboratory operator will no doubt be an expert on the materials used but not on their disposal. It is important for him to stay in touch with people familiar with disposal and provide them with detailed information. 

Determine the cost of cuirent waste generation and develop a (preliminary) system of proportional waste management (in terms of the ensuing pollution control and waste disposal measures) charges for the departments that generate waste. 

Pollution control and waste disposal now represent large operating and capital cost items for most lead smelters and refineries, and will increase in importance as more stringent environmental legislation is applied. In the USA, for instance, necessary environmental expenditures have probably raised operating costs in the secondary lead industry on average by more than a quarter in recent years, and capital costs by at least as much. 

Environmental Control and Waste Disposal These items are treated as a separate expenditure and are difficult to estimate due to the variety and complexity of the process requirements. Pollution control equipment is generally included as part of the process design. Couper (2003) and Peters et al. (2003) mention that at present there are no general guidelines for estimating these expenditures.

Assure that environment installations, including air and water pollution control devices, waste treatment plants, and waste disposal facilities are properly installed, maintained, and operated so that the conditions of federal and state operating permits are met.
