In the midst of Patterson s ice core and Greco-Roman studies in 1965, Dr. Katharine R. Boucot asked him to submit an article about lead pollution to Archives of Environmental Health. Boucot was chief editor of the journal, considered the bible of industrial toxicology. [Pg.183]

Part 1, Alpine Water Resources, examines the hydrological basics, the impacts of climate change in the Swiss Alps, and human interventions in mountain waters. Part 11, Biogeochemistry and Pollution of Alpine Waters, deals with the chemistry of mountain rivers, the effects of acid deposition on high elevation lakes, the glaciers as archives of atmospheric deposition, and the occurrence of persistent organic contaminants. [Pg.288]

Sulfite paper has a relatively short life span, since residual acid will continue to hydrolyze the cellulose and cause embrittlement. Further sources of acid include aluminum sulfate (which is added together with resin to suppress bleeding or feathering of ink into the paper) and S02 and NO from the atmosphere. Much of the world s library collections and archives will soon be lost as the paper crumbles. Various deacidification treatments (e.g., with ammonia, morpholine, cyclohexylamine carbamate, or diethyl-zinc) have been proposed and tried, but at best they can only halt the process of embrittlement and cannot reverse it.14 With the move to kraft pulping, alkaline peroxide bleaching, and increasing use of precipitated calcium carbonate as a filler, the high quality papers produced today are intrinsically acid free and should also resist subsequent acidification by S02-polluted air fairly well. [Pg.200]

The most important information is visual inspection of the area to be investigated, study of results from previous investigations (archive material), interrogation of workers in emitting plants or of inhabitants of polluted sites, and information on geohydrological and climatic conditions. [Pg.131]

It was believed that mounting on 100 percent rag board with tape hinges would create an archival presentation for the image. It turns out that rag board absorbs and retains pollutants and will pass them on to a print. In a day No. But certainly well within the 100 years we hope to achieve. [Pg.199]

In the meantime, it has been discovered that dry mounting tissue can act as a barrier to the pollutants in rag board—unless the tissue is itself full of contaminants and who is to say that the mounting tissue companies have done their homework There is no government agency that says they can t call their tissue archival even if it is made of wood pulp and acid. And what happens to a print that is permanently mounted on a board when the board becomes damaged ... [Pg.199]

When a pollutant is detected, all contamination sources should be considered. Knowledge of the pollutant arrival time may eliminate some suspected sources that started to operate at later dates, and helps narrow the list of possible sources of contamination. Hence the need for historic data (section 7.5). This information may be gathered from archives at local... [Pg.341]
