Pollutant impact

In order to build new facilities or expand existing ones without harming the environment, it is desirable to assess the air pollution impact of a facility prior to its construction, rather than construct and monitor to determine the impact and whether it is necessary to retrofit additional controls. Potential air pollution impact is usually estimated through the use of air quality simulation models. A wide variety of models is available. They are usually distinguished by type of source, pollutant, transformations and removal, distance of transport, and averaging time. No attempt will be made here to list aU the models in existence at the time of this writing. 

Releases into the environment may be natural or anthropogenic. Bacterial or mineral action may constitute worldwide generation sources that function independently of any human activity. If pollutant impacts are to be evaluated, both these sources and natural sinks, such as the oceans, soil... 

Finally, this determines the actual and potential exposure of living organisms to pollutants impact. 

Although biotests do not always lead to unambiguous and easily interpretable results, standardization of chemical and biological procedures from sampling to final measurement will contribute to increased reliability in the assessment of pollution impact on different systems.

Each site type matches a certain need of spatial representativeness. For example, sites located to determine local hot-spots are at places where the highest concentrations are expected and will mostly be microscale monitoring sites, while those measuring air pollution impacts on visibility and vegetation damage have to be representative over regional to national scale. 

Acidification. The acidification and thermal pollution impacts of a chemical plant in general do not come from the plant itself but are related to the conversion of fossil fuel to energy (steam, electricity) hence the same emission reduction factor as for carbon dioxide is assumed for the process intensification potential.

Pyrolysis units are expected to have minimal air pollution impacts because most of the pyro-gas generated in the pyrolysis process is burned as fuel in the process. During burning, the organic compounds are destroyed. Assuming complete combustion, the decomposition products are water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides ... 

No method is available for predicting the economic loss to vegetation in the United States from air pollutants. Surveys to date have not found a way to incorporate the impact of pollutants on the growth and yield of crops where visible injury is not found or, if present, is not recognized. If these factors were included with the additional pollutant impact on ornamentals and on natural ecosystems, it would be reasonable to expect...

The map of mean temperatures in January of Northrhine-Westphalia (Fig. 8) shows those areas below a mean of 0 C where a combination of frost and SO2 can lead to plant damage. Norway spruce, e.g., can tolerate winter temperatures of about — 40°C in healthy conditions, but — 10 C might be too much for a plant weakened by preceding or corresponding pollution impact. Forests close to the national borders of distribution are obviously especially endangered. 

In the 1940s, many chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides were developed though they did not come into widespread use until the 1950s. Common examples include aldrin, dieldrin, heptochlor, and endrin. However, in spite of their early promise, these organochlorine insecticides are now much less used because of their environmental pollution impact. 

Increasing interest in the impacts of tropospheric volcanic emissions on terrestrial and aquatic ecology and on human and animal health is driving more research into the tropospheric chemistry and transport of volcanic plumes. This will be of particular importance in understanding the long-range pollution impacts of volcanic clouds (that might be expected from future emptions like that of Laki 1783-1784). 

Another general method has been proposed to detect pollution impacts by examining a broad range of variables that describe ecological communities. The method employs the assumption that toxicants force directional selection towards tolerance.
