Platform design

Microfluidics and miniaturization hold great promise in terms of sample throughput advantages [100]. Miniaturization of analytical processes into microchip platforms designed for micro total analytical systems (/i-TASs) is a new and rapidly developing field. For SPE, Yu et al. [123] developed a microfabricated analytical microchip device that uses a porous monolith sorbent with two different surface chemistries. The monolithic porous polymer was prepared by in situ photoinitiated polymerization within the channels of the microfluidic device and used for on-chip SPE. The sorbent was prepared to have both hydrophobic and ionizable surface chemistries. Use of the device for sorption and desorption of various analytes was demonstrated [123]. 

More recently, a plethora of small companies and biotechnology ventures were established to handle biologies as well as natural products, many of them with proprietary screening platforms designed to make natural product screening more straightforward and quicker. Some developed proprietary collections of particular natural product sources for extract production such as organisms isolated from extreme environments, leaf litter, caves, unique water environments, and endophytes from marine and terrestrial plants. 

Postural Sway A team of researchers from the University of Cincinnati conducted a series of tests to assess the enrollee s balance. During the test, subjects were asked to perform a series of procedures while standing on a platform designed to measure changes in balance. The procedures included standing on the platform alone and with a foam pad between the platform and enrollee s feet while performing a series of procedures with their eyes open or closed. Each enrollee also answered a short list of questions prior to postural sway testing.

With these two design approaches, the modular design approach focuses on the development of independent modules for a specific product, while the platform design approach focuses on the development of modules and the platform for a series of products in a product family. The platform design approach can be considered as the extension of the modular design approach (Gu et al. 2004).

To accomplish this modeling, the demand and supply hierarchies must be decoupled to enable volume/mix what-if trade-offs iteratively between process steps. This S OP maturity stage requires the addition of two new capabilities demand translation and supply orchestration. The process of modeling demand volume/mix trade-offs between demand and supply is demand translation. In supply orchestration, trade-offs are determined and translated into buying strategies in commodity markets to determine the most effective formulation or platform design to schedule for manufacturing.

In this example, failure of BI contributes 80% of the risk of being unable to evacuate a platform in the teeth of a predicted storm. Beyond this loss of control point, event tree analysis in employed to assess the probability of the worst case outcome. There are two event sequences, each with a balance of probability, firstly as to whether the storm severity exceeds platform design parameters and lastly whether or not the platform is destroyed. The inclusion of an event tree analysis following a fault tree top event is termed a cause-consequence model.
