Scaffold planking

Scaffold planking that was not designed by a qualified person,... 

Only use ladders for the purpose for which they were designed, not as scaffold planking or as a work table. 

Don t use a ladder as a brace, skid, lever, guy or gin pole, gangway, platform, scaffold, plank, material hoist, or any other use for which it was not intended. 

Each platform unit (e.g., scaffold plank, fabricated plank, fabricated deck, or fabricated platform) shall be installed so that the space between adjacent units and the space between the platform and the uprights is no more than 1 inch wide, except where the employer can demonstrate that a wider space is necessary (for example, to fit around uprights when side brackets are used to extend the width of the platform). 

Unsecured scaffold planking extends a minimum of 6 inches beyond the ends of the scaffold support. 

The maximum permissible span for a IVa-inch by 9-inch or wider plank for full thickness is 4 feet, with medium loading of 50 pounds per square foot. Scaffold planks must extend over their supports not less than 6 inches or more than 18 inches. Scaffold planking must overlap a minimum of 12 inches or secured from movement.

On scaffolds where scaffold planks are abutted to create a long platform, each abutted end shall rest on a separate support surface. This provision does not preclude the use of common support members, such as T sections, to support abutting planks, or hook on platforms designed to rest on common supports. 

Not more than three employees shall occupy a 10 feet 6 inch span of scaffold planking at any time. 

A taut wire or synthetic rope supported on the scaffold brackets shall be installed at the scaffold plank level between the innermost edge of the scaffold platform and the curved plate structure of the tank shell to serve as a safety line in lieu of an inner guardrail assembly where the space between the scaffold platform and the tank exceeds 12 inches (30.48 cm). In the event the open space on either side of the rope exceeds 12 inches (30.48 cm), a second wire or synthetic rope appropriately placed, or guardrails in accordance with 1926.451 (g)(4), shall be installed in order to reduce that open space to less than 12 inches (30.48 cm). 

Scaffold planks of rough full-dimensioned 2-inch (5.1 cm) X 12-inch (30.5 cm) Douglas Fir or Southern Yellow Pine of Select Structural Grade shall be used.
