Deep South

South before 1965 stated that they were forbidden to pursue doctoral studies in Southern historically white colleges and universities because of racial segregation. Interviewees from the so-called Deep South reported that their native states provided funds for them to attend graduate school outside of the state. This confirms the earlier discussion of the historical participation of African Americans in U.S. higher education. [Pg.79]

If such shells were stored at elevated tempe-raturefin tropical countries or in the deep South of the United States), the low melting point areas would liquefy and, due to expansion, force their way out thru the threads of the booster cup... [Pg.378]

Certainly the proximity of HBCUs has helped us to build this program. We are in the deep South. There are lots of excellent small schools nearby and the word is out. LSU is a comfortable place for... [Pg.75]

Passage values (Figure 7). This may indicate a source of neodymium with high isotope ratios in the South Atlantic. However, it is premature to conclude that deep South Atlantic neodymium-isotope ratios overstep the Southern Ocean values, for the following reasons. The maxima for all of the deep South Atlantic waters are between SNd = 7 to —9, more variable than presently available data from the Drake Passage but still quite similar. This range is also similar to circumpolar Fe-Mn sediments (Albare(c)de et al., 1997). Depth profiles from the western Indian Ocean near southern Africa are similar to the South Atlantic and Drake Passage, but like the South... [Pg.3311]

In the deep south of the United States, swimming pools are often solar heated. Plastic pipe collectors are in common use. Rows of black plastic pipes are laid on the south-facing roof of the house. The pipes are plumbed so that the pool pump can circulate some of the pool water through the pipes. The black pipes adsorb the solar heat and warm the water. In Florida a well-engineered system allows the use of pool a month or so earlier in the spring and a similar time later in the fall. Few solar systems are capable of heating the pool to a satisfactory temperature all year round. People who like to swim all year round use gas, oil or electric heat pump heaters in addition to their solar heaters. [Pg.36]

Today, people receive the highest exposure to chlordane from living in homes that were treated with chlordane for termites. Chlordane may be found in the air in these homes for many years after treatment. Houses in the deep south and southwest were most commonly treated. However, chlordane use extended from the lower New England States south and west to California. Houses built since 1988 have not been treated with chlordane for termite control. You can determine if your home was treated with chlordane by examining your records or contacting your termite treatment service. [Pg.15]

In 1944 everyone understood that Roosevelt s fourth term would be his last. The man he selected for Vice President would therefore almost certainly take the Democratic Party presidential nomination in 1948. Byrnes expected to be that man and Roosevelt encouraged him. But the assistant President was a conservative Democrat from the Deep South, and at the last minute Roosevelt compromised instead on the man from Missouri, Harry S. Truman. I freely admit that I was disappointed, Byrnes... [Pg.619]

Guide ropes have historically been used in shafts with depths approaching 1800 m. Table 1 (Gray 1961) provides details of some deep South African rope Guided installations. [Pg.416]

Portrait of Washington Parish and Star Creek Diary are not works of academic scholarship in the vein of such sociological classics of the era as Charles S. Johnson s Shadow of the Plantation (1934), John Dollard s Caste and Class in a Southern Town (1937), Hortense Powdermaker s After Freedom (1940), or Allison Davis s Deep South (1941). They are, however, superb social observations written by a black intellectual at the height of his powers. Horace Mann Bond was also a fine writer. Portrait of Washington Parish and Star Creek Diary have immediacy and literary freshness. ... [Pg.19]
