Gloss retention

Maleic acid and fumaric acid can also be, and are often, incorporated in alkyd resins in the form of the Diels-Alder adduct of rosin. The adducts are tribasic acids which provide pendent carboxyl groups in the resin molecules, which can be saponified to give ionic, and, in turn, water-soluble characteristics to the resin. However, the resultant alkyds often have poorer color retention, toughness, gloss retention, and exterior durabiUty. [Pg.33]

Iron Oxides. In addition to the black iron oxide, there are several natural and synthetic yellow, brown, and red oxides. As a class, they provide inexpensive but dull, lightfast, chemically resistant, and nontoxic colors. The natural products ate known as ocher, sieima, umber, hematite, and limonite. These include varying amounts of several impurities in particular, the umbers contain manganese. Their use is limited because of low chroma, low tinting strength, and poor gloss retention. [Pg.458]

The alkyd resins are of value because of their comparatively low cost, durability, flexibility, gloss retention and reasonable heat resistance. Alkyd resins modified with rosin, phenolic resin, epoxy resins and monomers such as styrene are of current commercial importance. [Pg.741]

Silicone alkyds These are alkyds modified with silicone resin. They have superior resistance to weathering (particularly gloss retention) than pure alkyds but are generally significantly more expensive. They are useful for exterior use where appearance is important. [Pg.127]

In comparison with epoxies, the correctly formulated urethane can possess considerably superior gloss retention and flexibility. They also form a film so hard and solvent resistant that they can be used as anti-graffiti coating. The graffiti can be removed with solvent without damaging the urethane. Since these materials give off toxic fumes in a fire it is preferable that they are not used in confined spaces. [Pg.130]

Modem floor finishes contain mixtures of ingredients that when applied as a liquid dry to give a clear, durable film coating. Most floor finishes are combinations of polymers blended to provide unique and desirable characteristics such as durability, gloss retention, resistance to scuffing, fast-drying, and ease of removal. Polymers made up of more than one monomer or repeating unit are called copolymers. [Pg.125]

Development of a glossy, aesthetic and unpainted roof module on the Smart Roadster by DaimlerChrysler AG s Smart. The two-piece, removable roof, built by ArvinMeritor, is surfaced with a thermoformable three-layer film (Lexan by GE Plastics) that can be co-moulded with either thermoplastic or thermoset substrates. The film exhibits 95% gloss retention after the equivalent of 10 years of Florida sun exposure. Weight saving is 50% versus a painted steel roof system. [Pg.850]

Evaluations of furniture polish application properties, gloss, uniformity, film clarity, smear and mar resistance, film healing, buffability, cleaning, water spotting, gloss retention, and dust attraction are all described in ASTM D3751-79. Federal Specification P-P553B (1977) indudes some standard test methods for the evaluation of liquid furniture polishes. [Pg.209]
