Eixed costs include corporate overhead and administration costs as well as those plant-related costs that do not vary with production and contribute 5 to 30% of the total manufacturing cost. 

Since many industrial accidents are plant and/or process related, this chapter is devoted to process fundamentals. The material is presented in the traditional engineering format, but without specific references to accidents and emergencies. The last tlu-ee chapters of Part II are primarily concerned with plant-related accidents. 

This section focuses on industrial accidents tliat are not plant related and revievs ing accidents tliat occur during tlie transport and storage of hazardous substances. Frequently, such accidents result in fires, explosions, and toxic releases. This topic will be discussed in tlie next cliapter. 

Some of tlie preceding cliapters liave dealt witli tlie history and legislation of emergency and accidents tliis cliapter addresses specifically tlie fundamentals of plant fires, explosions, and certain otlier plant- and non-plant-related accidents. 

Section 7.4 presented tlwee major types of explosion. Tliis section more closely examines plant-related explosions, focusing on causes, results, and damage potentials. The means for explosion protection and prevention arc the subject of a subsequent chapter.

Apart from the provision of various permutations of (chemical-based) boiler water programs, it is common to find water treatment companies supplying value adding chemicals and services in other boiler plant-related areas where their expertise in applied chemical technology can deliver additional economic benefit. Such areas typically include cleaning services for boiler waterside and fireside and the provision of fuel treatments and combustion additives, dust suppressants (for coal and ash handling), acids, and cleaner products. 

Another important aspect of batch plants relates to the representation of the recipe which is invariably the underlying feature of the resultant mathematical formulation. The most common representation of recipe in the published literature is the state task network (STN) that was proposed by Kondili et al. (1993), which comprises of 2 types of nodes, viz. state nodes and task nodes. The state nodes represent all the materials that are processed within the plant. These are broadly categorized into feeds, intermediates and final products. On the other hand, task nodes represent unit operations or tasks that are conducted in various equipment units within the process.

The silica carrier of a sulphuric acid catalyst, which has a relatively low surface area, serves as an inert support for the melt. It must be chemically resistant to the very corrosive pyrosulphate melt and the pore structure of the carrier should be designed for optimum melt distribution and minimum pore diffusion restriction. Diatomaceous earth or synthetic silica may be used as the silica raw material for carrier production. The diatomaceous earth, which is also referred to as diatomite or kieselguhr, is a siliceous, sedimentary rock consisting principally of the fossilised skeletal remains of the diatom, which is a unicellular aquatic plant related to the algae. The supports made from diatomaceous earth, which may be pretreated by calcination or flux-calcination, exhibit bimodal pore size distributions due to the microstructure of the skeletons, cf. Fig. 5.

The observed pharmacological activities of medicinal plants relate to the chlorogenic acids constituents of the plant. However, medicinal plants are a complex mixture of chemically different compounds.

Rauwolfia serpentina Benth, which derives its name from Leonhart Rauwolf, a 16th century botanist, and its serpentine root (Figure 56.1), has long been used in India for a variety of ailments. The discovery of its tranquilizing action, particularly in lowering the blood pressure, led to its introduction into Western medicine.
