A number of other polysaccharides, such as glycogen, dextran, chitin, etc., possess interesting structures for chemical modification [103,104]. Dextran has been used as a blood plasma substitute. Resource restriction. If chemical defenses vary quantitatively within or between individual plants, then some tissues may be defended while others are not. As a result, insects have available to them the evolutionary option of avoidance they may develop the ability to recognize poor quality food and avoid it, rather than evolving detoxication mechanisms (12,18). Nitric Phosphate. About 15% of worldwide phosphate fertilizer production is by processes that are based on solubilization of phosphate rock with nitric acid iastead of sulfuric or phosphoric acids (64). Usually there is no opportunity to repeat the measurements to determine the experimental variance or standard deviation. This is the most common situation encountered in field measurements.
