In some parts of the United States special precautions may be necessary the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts are noted for hurricanes the plains states have tornadoes and the highest probability of earthquakes occurs in California and Alaska. Care must also be taken when locating near a river to be certain that flooding, which is always a possibility, will not harm the plant. For the Equipment Safety Subindex the process plant area is divided into two different areas, which have different safety properties. The onsite area is the area where the raw materials are converted into the products. This is referred as the inside battery limits area (ISBL). This area is characterized by large number of equipment and piping located in a concentrated way in a small area. The rest of the plant is referred as the offsite or outside battery limits area (OSBL). The offsite area is characterized by large inventories of fluids, which are often flammable and/or toxic. The number of equipment in OSBL area is smaller but their size larger than in the ISBL area. The layout is much more scattered in OSBL than in ISBL which is to enhance safety. [Pg.74]

Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-d1oxin (TCDD). At the detection limit of ten parts per trillion, no TCDD was found in the effluents from the combustion of coal in three different boilers at the Ames power plant (see summary table in reference 16 for description of boilers). This observation was confirmed at a second smaller coal-fired power plant located at Iowa State University. Even when the coal fuel was supplemented with RDF, which should contain the precursor compounds, no dioxins were observed in the vapor and particle samples taken from the effluents. Thus no de novo synthesis occurred during the combustion of coal alone and if dioxins were formed from precursor compounds in the co-combustion of coal and RDF, they were destroyed in the efficient combustion as explained above for the thermal destruction of the PCBs present in the RDF. [Pg.126]

Designed by the DOE, such a design was implemented at Daggett, California, and named Solar One. In 1995 this plant was converted and expanded to a total area of 82,750 m2, and is referred to as Solar Two. Coal Tar Products. Elevated red and white cell counts in urine were noted in 6-8% (29-34 of 452) of the employees examined in an industrial health survey in nine coal tar plants in which coal tar creosote and coal tar were the main treatments used (TOMA 1981). Some of these cell count elevations were attributed to urinary tract infections resulting from inadequate personal hygiene, and not to industrial exposure to toxic chemicals. However, some of the workers with elevated red and white cell counts in urine had cellular and granular casts and traces of protein, suggesting abnormal renal function. These individuals were referred to their physicians for diagnosis. No determination of exposure was made at the nine coal tar plants (TOMA 1981). Moreover, no clear relationship could be established because exposure routes in addition to inhalation (e.g., oral and dermal) were likely. Also, the ability to relate renal effects to coal tar creosote and coal tar exposure was further confounded by the possibility that the subjects were also exposed to other chemicals and cigarette smoke. Additional limitations of the study included seasonal and geographical variation in plant locations, past employment history, voluntary participation in the study that could have biased it in favor of healthy workers, lack of statistical analyses, lack of adequate controls, and use of only current employees. [Pg.62]

Chemical recuperation of high-temperature heat is an alternative to raising steam [427]. In ammonia plants the steam is used to drive the S5mgas compressor (refer to Section 2.5), but as discussed for hydrogen plants (refer to Section 2.2) and GTL plants at remote locations (refer to Section 2.6.5) there may be no need for the steam, and recuperation of the heat of the hot process gas in a heat exchange reformer may be an option (as illustrated in Figure 2.35 and Figure 2.36). [Pg.138]
