When side chains of two or more different kinds are attached to a cyclic component, only the senior side chain is named by the conjunctive method. The remaining side chains are named as prefixes. Likewise, when there is a choice of cyclic component, the senior is chosen. Benzene derivatives may be named by the conjunctive method only when two or more identical side chains are present. Trivial names for oxo carboxylic acids may be used for the acyclic component. If the cyclic and acyclic components are joined by a double bond, the locants of this bond are placed as superscripts to a Greek capital delta that is inserted between the two names. The first reaction, the addition of formaldehyde to the amino compound, is catalyzed by either acids or bases. Hence, it takes place over the entire pH range. The hydrocarbon gas feedstock and Hquid sulfur are separately preheated in an externally fired tubular heater. When the gas reaches 480—650°C, it joins the vaporized sulfur. A special venturi nozzle can be used for mixing the two streams (81). Nonconventiona.1 Solder Systems. Nonconventional solder systems are developed for use with newer alloys, especially base metal alloys. They are few in number and will probably remain the exception rather than the rule. Some new solder systems consist of metallic particles either pressed to form a rod or suspended in a paste flux. The metallic composition is close to that of the alloy to be joined. If the particles are nonhomogeneous, the solder has particles with melting points lower and higher than that of the alloy. For nonhomogeneous solders, once the flame has been placed on the parts to be joined and the soldering material, it should not be removed until the flow process is completed. [Pg.488]

Galvanic corrosion may occur at stainless steel welds if sensitization has taken place or if welding has produced unfavorable dissimilar phases (see Chap. 15, Weld Defects, particularly Case History 15.1). These forms of microstructural galvanic corrosion do not involve the joining of two different metals in the usual sense. [Pg.358]

The contact between the aluminium layers and the ceramic substrate requires a joining material which will wet both metal and ceramic, and solders such as the conventional Pb-Sn alloy have been used which are molten during the annealing process. The contact between the solder and the aluminium layer is frequently unsatisfactoty because of the intervention of the AI2O3 layer, and a practical solution appears to be to place drree layers of metal clrromium in contact widr the aluminium, copper in contact with the clrromium, and gold between the copper layer and the solder. [Pg.220]

The corrosion voltages of Fig. 23.3 also tell you what will happen when two dissimilar metals are joined together and immersed in water. If copper is joined to zinc, for instance, the zinc has a larger corrosion voltage than the copper. The zinc therefore becomes the anode, and is attacked the copper becomes the cathode, where the oxygen reaction takes place, and it is unattacked. Such couples of dissimilar metals can be dangerous the attack at the anode is sometimes very rapid, as we shall see in the next chapter. [Pg.229]
