The corrosion voltages of Fig. 23.3 also tell you what will happen when two dissimilar metals are joined together and immersed in water. If copper is joined to zinc, for instance, the zinc has a larger corrosion voltage than the copper. The zinc therefore becomes the anode, and is attacked the copper becomes the cathode, where the oxygen reaction takes place, and it is unattacked. Such couples of dissimilar metals can be dangerous the attack at the anode is sometimes very rapid, as we shall see in the next chapter. [Pg.229]

The columnar, cuboidal basal cells are 18-20 xm in height and 8-10 iim in diameter. They form a monolayer adhered to a basement membrane by hemidesmosomes which are linked to anchoring fibrils of collagen type VII. At the lateral borders, basal cells are extensively interdigitated and joined together in places only by junctional complexes (zonula adherens), desmosomes, and gap junctions. [Pg.287]

Finally, there are some important factors which lie outside the company but are more within the traditional management remit company strategies and investment decisions also depend partly on competitors moves, which should be watched and anticipated. Products need to be distinctive the intellectual property needs to be in place to introduce a new biotech process and companies should stay alert to opportunities to align interests and join forces. [Pg.383]

This result can be put to good use. Suppose that we want to determine the concentration of a Cu2+ solution. We could place a sample of the solution in contact with a Cu electrode, and join this half-cell with another Cu2+/Cu half-cell with precisely known Cu2+ concentration. The potential of the resulting cell would be a measure of the unknown Cu2+ concentration. The Cu electrode in contact with the Cu2+ solution of unknown concentration is called an indicator electrode, since it "indicates" the unknown concentration. [Pg.176]

T wo 1 -m-square plates are placed in a perpendicular position and joined together. One is maintained at 300°C with e = 0.5 while the other is perfectly insulated with e = 0.7. Both plates are placed in a large room maintained at 30°C. Calculate the heat lost by the 300°C plate and the temperature of the insulated plate using the numerical method. [Pg.483]
