First, the chemical difference between the ring structures of PGE and PGF prostaglandins is that in PGE there is a keto group at position 9, whilst in PGF this position is taken up by a hydroxyl (secondary alcohol) group.

Recently, a novel class of prostaglandin derivatives, PG-1,15-lactones (Fig. 1) of both E [16] and F [17] series, has been reported to occur in the opisthobranch mollusc Tethys fimbria, along with smaller amounts of some of the corresponding PGs. Some lactones were present mainly in the mucous secretion and dorsal appendages known as cerata, while others were more abundant in the mantle. Fatty acid esters of PGF-1,15-lactones (C9 and Cu) were found only in T. fimbria eggmasses and reproductive glands (ovotestis). Originally isolated from the prostate gland (hence the name pro sta-gland-in), prostaglandins are chemically simple fatty acid-like molecules (Figure 5.3). Structural differences give rise to several series of structurally different prostaglandins, for example PGE, PGF and thromboxane. 

In 1935, von Eular demonstrated a substance present in the extracts of human seminal fluid, which caused contraction of the isolated intestine and uterine muscle. This substance was named as prostaglandin (PG) because of its probable origin from the prostate gland. In 1962, the structure of two prostaglandins namely PGEj PGF were elucidated and in 1964, PGE was biosynthesized. 

Induction of labour PG s do not have any advantage over oxytocin for the induction of labour. The adverse effects of the prostaglandins are slightly higher than that produced by oxytocin. PGF has more gastrointestinal toxicity than PGE and is a bronchoconstrictor also. Oral PGE is superior to oral oxytocin. PGE PGF is used in place of oxytocin in renal failure patients. 

There are two main types of prostaglandins that differ in the oxygen function at C9, which is a carbonyl in Series E (PGE) and hydroxyl in Series F (PGF). Examples follow ... 

Prostaglandins have shown up in a synthesized form on the black market since a few years ago. I have personally seen amazing transformations in those who had bravely injected PGF-2 site specifically 3-5 times per day. The injections were administered directly into the muscle group trained that day (usually with a fast-acting insulin such as Humulin R or Humalog). Due to extreme soreness, that body part could not be trained for a few days following injections. Since PGF-2 is site-specific, abdominal enlargement does not seem to occur as with IGF-1.
