James O. Maloney is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Kansas. He holds a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering from Pennsylvania State University. In 1941 he began liis professional career at the DuPont de Nemours Company, before joining the University of Kansas in 1945, where he taught for 40 years. He served as department chairman for nineteen years. He is a fellow of the AIChE. [Pg.6]

There are three basic engineering fields of knowledge. These are called the engineering arts and sciences. They are the mechanical arts and sciences, the chemical arts and sciences, and the electrical arts and sciences. Every specific engineering discipline, such as petroleum engineering, utilizes one of the basic engineering fields of knowledge as their scholarly foundation. [Pg.366]

Sami Matar, Ph.D., is a retired professor of chemistry at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dharan, Saudi Arabia. He received a B.Sc. from the University of Cairo and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Texas, Austin. Dr. Matar has served as associate member of the board of the Egyptian Petroleum Institute and general manager of the chemical and research laboratories of Suez Oil Processing Co. The author and contributor to many articles and books. Dr. Matar is also a member of the American Chemical Society and Society of Petroleum Engineers. [Pg.392]

Issues such as the ones above are of paramount importance and interest to practicing engineers, researchers and graduate students. In the next paragraphs we mention several examples that cover many important areas of chemical, biochemical and petroleum engineering. [Pg.3]

Petroleum and chemical engineers perform oil reservoir simulation to optimize the production of oil and gas. Black-oil, compositional or thermal oil reservoir models are described by sets of differential equations. The measurements consist of the pressure at the wells, water-oil ratios, gas-oil ratios etc. The objective is to estimate through history matching of the reservoir unknown reservoir properties such as porosity and permeability. [Pg.5]

Mr. Nolan has received numerous of safety awards and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, National Fire Protection Association, Society of Petroleum Engineers, and Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He is the author of the book "Application of HAZOP and What-If Safety Reviews to the Petroleum, Petrochemical and Chemical Industries," which is widely referred to within the petroleum and chemical industries. Mr. Nolan has also been listed in "Who s Who in California" for the last ten years and has been elected to appear in the 1996 International Edition of "Who s Who of Science and Engineering."... [Pg.294]

Considering the composition of petroleum and petroleum products (Speight, 1994, 1999), it is not surprising that petroleum and petroleum-derived chemicals are environmental pollutants (Loeher, 1992 Olschewsky and Megna, 1992). The world s economy is highly dependent on petroleum for energy production, and widespread use has led to enormous releases to the environment of petroleum, petroleum products, exhaust from internal combustion engines, emissions from oil-fired power plants, and industrial emissions where fuel oil is employed. [Pg.4]

In the previous chapter we discussed some topics that chemical engineers need to know about chemical reactions and chemical reactors. In this chapter we will begin to define quantities, formulate and solve mass-balance equations, and consider some examples. We will then completely change topics and summarize some of the major reactors in the petroleum and chemical industries. [Pg.21]

The major petroleum and chemical companies have basically defined chemical engineering, as their origins and growth have coincided with this discipline. Table 3-5 lists the top chemical companies in the world in 1995. [Pg.127]
