The U.S. FDA monitors foods for half of the approximately 300 pesticides having official EPA tolerances as weU as a number of other pesticides that have no official tolerances. Multiresidue methods, most of which are based on chromatography protocols, are employed (7). A multiresidue analytical method based on sohd-phase extraction enrichment combined with ce has been reported to isolate, recover, and quantitate three sulfonylurea herbicides (chlorsulfuron, chlorimuron, and metasulfuron) from soil samples (105). Sample pre-treatment. Novel procedures of electrochemical sample treatment have been proposed to decrease the signal interference with native cholinesterase inhibitors present in fruits and vegetables. Polyphenolic compounds were removed by electrolysis with soluble A1 anode followed by the oxidation of thionic pesticides with electrogenerated chlorine. The procedure proposed makes it possible to decrease the background current and the matrix effect by 80-90%. In 1980 the Drinking Water Directive was introduced, which specified a maximum limit of 0.1 /rgU for any pesticide in drinking water and 0.5 /rgU for total pesticides. Monitoring was needed for a wide range of pesticides in water and this became the impetus for developing new analytical techniques capable of detecting pesticides at very low levels.
