In order to ensure perpendicular beam incidence on the cylindrical specimen, the circular B-scan profiles were acquired by high frequency (narrow beam) transducers in a synthetic circular aperture array. From these profiles two-dimensional reflection tomograms were reconstructed using a filtered backprojection technique. Straight line propagation was assumed. Several artificial discontinuity types in a cylindrical Plexiglas (Perspex) specimen were compared with similar artificial discontinuities in a cylindrical A/Si-alloy [2]. Furthermore, examples of real discontinuities (an inclusion and a feed head) in the cylindrical AlSi-alloy are presented. [Pg.200]

Place 25 g. of methyl methacrylate polymer (G.B. Diakon (powder). Perspex (sheet) U.S.A. Lucite, Plexiglass) in a 100 ml. Claisen flask, attach an efficient condenser e.g., of the double smface type) and distil with a small luminous flame move the flame to and fro around the sides of the flask. At about 300° the polymer softens and undergoes rapid depolymerisation to the monomer, methyl methacrylate, which distils over into the receiver. Continue the distillation until only a small black residue (3-4 g.) remains. Redistil the hquid it passes over at 100-110°, mainly at 100-102°. The yield of methyl methacrylate (monomer) is 20 g. If the monomer is to be kept for any period, add 0 -1 g. of hydro quinone to act as a stabiUser or inhibitor of polymerisation. [Pg.1023]

Many of the most floppy polymers have half-melted in this way at room temperature. The temperature at which this happens is called the glass temperature, Tq, for the polymer. Some polymers, which have no cross-links, melt completely at temperatures above T, becoming viscous liquids. Others, containing cross-links, become leathery (like PVC) or rubbery (as polystyrene butadiene does). Some typical values for Tg are polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA, or perspex), 100°C polystyrene (PS), 90°C polyethylene (low-density form), -20°C natural rubber, -40°C. To summarise, above Tc. the polymer is leathery, rubbery or molten below, it is a true solid with a modulus of at least 2GNm . This behaviour is shown in Fig. 6.2 which also shows how the stiffness of polymers increases as the covalent cross-link density increases, towards the value for diamond (which is simply a polymer with 100% of its bonds cross-linked. Fig. 4.7). Stiff polymers, then, are possible the stiffest now available have moduli comparable with that of aluminium. [Pg.62]
