Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Equipment, provided to shield or isolate a person from the chemical, physical, and thermal hazards that may be encountered at a hazardous materials incident and should include protection for the respiratory system, skin, eyes, face, hands, feet, head, body, and hearing. 

All experiments must be carried out in a fume hood with the use of proper personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields, a laboratory coat or apron, and the proper gloves for hands. 

Please be advised that all chemicals should be considered hazardous and should be handled in a hood and with proper personal protective equipment (lab coat, proper gloves, approved safety glasses, and/or goggles). Avoid inhaling vapors and/or aerosolized materials. Avoid skin/eye contact with all chemicals at all times. Wash hands frequently. See the instructor if you have any questions or concerns. 

Prior to leaving the lobby for fire-suppression activities, all members will be wearing full personal protective equipment including SCBA, and will have cylinder valves opened. In addition, each person will have a personal light along with hand tools prior to entering the stair tower for suppression operations. 

The most common use of personal protective equipment is for the protection of head, eyes, ears, torso, hands, and feet. This equipment helps to protect a person from damage normally encountered in an industrial plant, a construction site, or land renovation project. PPE includes devices and clothing designed to be worn or used for the protection or safety of an individual in potentially hazardous areas or performing potentially hazardous operations. 

Wear appropriate, personal, protective equipment for the task at hand - Nomex clothing compliant with NFPA standard 1500, rubber gloves, and dielectric overshoes and tools (insulated sticks and cable cutters). 

All laboratory workers must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Safety goggles must be worn in laboratory areas. Face shields, laboratory coats or aprons, latex, rubber or heat-resistant gloves, dust masks and safety shoes may be required for specific work. Understanding the hazards of the materials at hand is important for wearing the appropriate PPE, but also for shunning excessive use of PPE. Overprotection may cause awkwardness and increase the possibility for injury. To strike a balance between reasonable and inordinate safety measures, the safety officer and analyst should communicate on how best to perform a given operation. In some laboratories, there may be a HAZM AT-certified PPE technician that can help in making these choices.
