Stair towers

Prior to leaving the lobby for fire-suppression activities, all members will be wearing full personal protective equipment including SCBA, and will have cylinder valves opened. In addition, each person will have a personal light along with hand tools prior to entering the stair tower for suppression operations. 

Several firefighters are ready to leave the lobby area and enter the stair tower for fire-suppression activities. What should they do next ... 

When scaffold platforms are more than 2 feet above or below a point of access, portable ladders, hook-on ladders, attachable ladders, stair towers (scaffold stairways/towers), stairway-type ladders (such as ladder stands), ramps, walkways, integral prefabricated scaffold access, or direct access from another scaffold, structure, personnel hoist, or similar surface shall be used. Crossbraces shall not be used as a means of access. 

Stair tower (Scaffold stairway/tower) means a tower comprised of scaffold components and which contains internal stairway units and rest platforms. These towers are used to provide access to scaffold platforms and other elevated points such as floors and roofs. 

Cylinders should be stored in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, flames, or any source of heat or ignition. Cylinders may be stored outside on a slab, however, where extreme temperatures prevail, cylinders should be stored so that they are protected from the direct rays of the sun. Do not expose cylinders to temperatures above 125°F (50 C). Cylinders should not be exposed to continuous dampness or stored near salt or other corrosive chemicals or fumes. Corrosion may damage cylinders and cause their valve protection caps to stick. Cylinders containing corrosive chemicals should be periodically checked to ensure that the valve has not corroded. Avoid prolonged storage of cylinders in corridors. Never store cylinders in elevator lobbies, stair towers, or any other location that could obstruct the safe exit pathway of the building occupants. 

Stair towers (scaffold stairway/towers) shall be positioned such that their bottom step is not more than 24 in. (61 cm.) above the scaffold supporting level. A stair rail consisting of a top rail and a mid-rail shall be provided on each side of each scaffold stairway. The top rail of each stair rail system shall also be capable of serving as a handrail, unless a separate handrail is provided.

What Inspect elevators, runways, stairs, etc. for the acid tower for defects that may occur because of exposure to acid or corrosive gases.
