Personal Clothing

Newly fabricated or repaired glass equipment for pressure or vacuum work should be examined for flaws and strains under polarized light. Corks, mbber stoppers, and rubber or plastic tubing should never be relied on as relief devices for protection of glassware against excess pressure a liquid seal, Bunsen tube, or equivalent positive relief device should be used. When glass pipe is used, only proper metal fittings should be used. 

Cryogenic liquids are materials with boiling points of less than -73 °C (-100 °F). Liquid nitrogen, helium, and argon, and slush mixtures of dry ice with isopropanol are the materials most commonly used in cold traps to condense volatile vapors from a system. In addition, oxygen, hydrogen, and helium are often used in the liquid state. 

The primary hazards of cryogenic liquids are fire or explosion, pressure buildup (either slowly or due to rapid conversion of the liquid to the gaseous state), embrittlement of structural materials, frostbite, and asphyxiation. The extreme cold of cryogenic liquids requires special care in their use. The vapor that boils off from a liquid can cause the same problems as the liquid itself. 

Cryogenic liquids must be stored, shipped, and handled in containers that are designed for the pressures and temperatures to which they may be subjected. Materials that are pliable under normal conditions can become brittle at low temperatures. Dewar flasks, which are used for relatively small amounts of material, should have a dust cap over the outlet to prevent atmospheric moisture from condensing and plugging the neck of the tube. Special cylinders insulated and vacuum-jacketed with pressure-relief valves and rupture devices to protect the cylinder from pressure buildup are available in capacities of 100 to 200 liters (L). 

Cylinders and other pressure vessels used for the storage and handling of liquefied gases should not be filled to more than 80% of capacity, to protect against possible thermal expansion of the contents and bursting of the vessel by hydrostatic pressure. If the possibility exists that the terqterature of the cylinder may increase to above 30°C, a lower percentage (e.g., 60%) of capacity should be the limit.

Overalls or personal clothing that become contaminated with lubricants should be removed as soon as possible -... 

All protective clothing should be maintained in a sound condition, cleaned/washed/replaced regularly as appropriate, and be stored apart from everyday clothing. With toxic chemicals a double locker system is advisable. With highly toxic substances, e.g. lead compounds or asbestos-based substances, separate storage of personal clothing and protective clothing is specifically required. 

Do not enter the plant in personal clothing, street shoes, or with unwashed hands. 

The individual personal clothing worn by the 8 mixers are shown in Table VII. 

Always use personal protective eqnipment (PPE) and protective clothing to cover exposed parts of the body and personal clothing. 

Place reusable items in a plastic bag or hamper away from your other personal clothes and away from the family laundry. Place disposables in a separate plastic bag or container. The pesticides remaining on your personal protective equipment, work clothing, and other work items could injure persons who touch them. Do not allow children or pets near them. Do not allow contaminated gloves, boots, respirators, or other equipment to be washed in streams, ponds, or other bodies of water. 

Store wearing apparel in appropriate places. Laboratory aprons must not be hung on the same rack with personal clothing. 

Bulky or fluffy personal clothing should be removed before aseptic or clean room garments are donned. Wristwatches and jewelry other than a simple wedding ring should not be worn. Cosmetics which can shed particles should not be used.

All the numbers are for general area contamination. For personal clothing they should be at least ten times less and for the skin of the body, the levels should be either zero or as close as can be obtained by decontamination efforts that do not cause damage to the tissue. 

Injured persons clothing may contain evidence of interest to law enforcement. Do not discard. Treat aU explosions as crime scenes.

When working in the laboratory you should also consider the potential flammability of your own personal clothing. Many synthetic materials are flammable and once ignited burn rapidly, increasing your chances of serious burns. If you are using flammables, pyrophorics, or highly reactive materials, you may want to select cotton clothing over synthetic materials.

Coats and Smocks Coats and smocks extend to the knee or below. They create a barrier for spills of various substances reaching personal clothing or skin. Depending on the fabric used, the coat or smock may be suitable for splatter of water, acids, oils, solvents, or other materials. The coats and smocks may be collected and cleaned for reuse or disposed of following use.
