Personal protective equipment flame-resistant clothing

If your plant contains flammable or combustible materials, you should have written emergency procedures fora leak. Review and understand these procedures, participate in drills, and know what you must do to protect yourself and others in case cf a leak. Know when and how to use appropriate personal protective equipment (for example, flame resistant clothing) and leak detection equipment such as portable flammable material detectors. 

Note to paragraph (a) Paragraph (d) of 1926.95 sets employer payment obligations for the personal protective equipment required by this subpart, including, but not limited to, the fall protection equipment required by paragraph (b) of this section, the electrical protective equipment required by 1926.960(c), and the flame-resistant and arc-rated clothing and other protective equipment required by 1926.960(g). 

A. Yes. As required by OSHA s general rules on employer payment for personal protective equipment (29 CFR 1910.132(h) and 29 CFR 1926.95(d)), employers must pay for the flame-resistant and arc-rated clothing and other arc-flash protective equipment that the electric power generation, transmission and distribution standards require. 

One hazard of wearing flame resistant (FR) clothing is that it can encapsulate the body, which can decrease the evaporative cooling effect. This forces the body to use extra energy and resources to get rid of that heat and keep the body s temperature at the optimum level. That is why it is important to select FR clothing that provides the proper protection and also that regulates skin temperature. While the use of personal protective equipment is part of the job in some industries — such as welding helmet for welders and flame-resistant clothing for certain oil and gas workers — as a rule, it is considered a last resort, temporary type of protection.
