Personal appearance

In some cases, Narcissistic Personality Disorder can cluster with both drug abuse and antisocial behavior. People with this disorder typically display grandiosity, selfishness/self-centeredness, exploitation of others, beliefs about being gifted and special, arrogance, an excessive preoccupation with self and personal appearances, and the need to have others affirm how special they are. Sometimes these qualities are difficult to separate from antisocial behavior, but key differences center around the criminal behavior and the ability to inflict physical cruelty found in antisocial behavior. Effective treatment for Narcissistic Personality Disorder includes cognitive behavioral therapy as well. [Pg.66]

Research into the risk factors for Cluster A personality disorders has focused on genetic factors. In particular, many researchers have looked for a shared genetic linkage between these disorders and schizophrenia. Only schizotypal personality appears to be genetically linked to schizophrenia. It may be that STPD exists on a biological continuum with schizophrenia. In other words, STPD could theoretically be a far milder variant of Axis I schizophrenia. There is less evidence linking PPD or SPD to schizophrenia nevertheless, certain characteristic symptoms of these other disorders also overlap with schizophrenia. [Pg.318]

Fuel cells did not boom again for more than 50 years, although there was occasional activity in Europe. Then another person appeared on the scene, a man in the same vein as Sir William Grove, but much, much more persistent. This was Francis Thomas Bacon, and since it was he who stood directly behind NASA s use of fuel cells in the space flights, it can truly be said that more than any other individual, it was... [Pg.279]

As the campaign progresses, the Democrat concentrates on personal appearances in the industrial Northeast, plus forays into the larger states of Texas, California, and Florida. The Republican candidate does less actual campaigning, preferring to spend more time on fundraising to pay for the (expensive) television ads. [Pg.139]

Vanity was the beginning and the end of Sir Walter Elliott s character vanity of person and of situation. He had been remarkably handsome in his youth and, at fifty-four, was still a very fine man. Few women could think more of their personal appearance than he did nor could the valet of any new made lord be more delighted with the place he held in society. He considered the blessing of beauty as inferior only to the blessing of a baronetcy and the Sir Walter Elliott, who united these gifts, was the constant object of his wannest respect and devotion, (vol. 1, Chapter 1)... [Pg.137]

The Market Researcher. The market researcher is, whether he likes it or not, the pioneer salesman for the product. The impression he makes on prospective customers can be good or bad and can, thereby, make later calls by salesmen easier or more difficult. At the same time, he has an excellent opportunity to size up the purchasing agent or buyer and later to alert the sales force as to what approach to make to this particular individual. To do all this properly, he must have all the attributes of a good chemical salesman in the highest sense—personality, appearance, an ability to think in terms of customer benefits, and a thorough knowledge of the product both technically and commercially. [Pg.82]

Patients with inactive tuberculosis who have not received adequate therapy should be considered for 1 year of isoniazid treatment. HIV-infected intravenous drug abusers with a positive PPD test have 8% chance per year of developing active tuberculosis. Isoniazid prophylaxis in HIV-infected persons appears to be as effective as in non-immunocompromised persons. The CDC recommends that isoniazid prophylaxis be continued for 12 months. Persons infected with HIV who are exposed to multidrug-resistant tuberculosis should receive prophylaxis with rifampin and pyrazinamide (with close monitoring for hepatic toxicity) or high-dose ethambutol and pyrazinamide, with or without a fluoroquinolone. [Pg.793]

Another example of crrltural differences would be that personal appearance is often more important than where one lives. As a result an executive secretary will wear the latest fashions and look like she really fits into the business world, but may live in a squatter shack. The concept of what is important is different and we need to understand this as we deal with foreign companies. [Pg.103]

In addition to decorative clothing, cosmetics were also used to enhance personal appearance, as were perfumes. One Babylonian text specifically mentions that women worked as perfume preparers as well as men, so women were involved in at least this area of early chemical technology, and they were most likely involved in others. As time went on, these chemical technologies became more advanced, so that the artisans were able to produce many more interesting and useful materials. One of the most interesting is a material that like gold initially had no purpose other than the beauty it provided glass. [Pg.15]
