The factors that correlate with treatment success do not clearly apply to success after detoxification from methadone maintenance. Correlates of successful detoxification include 1) less criminal behavior 2) more stable family 3) more stable employment 4) shorter drug history 5) long maintenance with lower dosage and 6) discharge status, with patient and staff consensus as opposed to unilateral discharge from treatment (Dole and Joseph 1978). In one study, addicts were followed an average of 2 years after detoxification (Stim-mel et al. 1977). Although only 28% of the total sample remained abstinent, 83% of those who had fully completed treatment remained abstinent. Another study of 105 patients detoxified after methadone maintenance treatment documented an 82% relapse rate within 12 months (Ball and Ross 1991). These... [Pg.83]

Taxon Scale (CATS) and were later used in other studies. This finding suggests that the nature of criminal behavior changes across the life span in childhood it is reflective of latent taxonicity, but it primarily taps continuous variance in adults. This conclusion is somewhat at odds with the finding that Factor 2 of the PCL-R (antisocial behavior) is taxonic. Perhaps the inconsistency reflects a disconnection between criminality and behavioral manifestations of psychopathy. [Pg.135]

In some cases, Narcissistic Personality Disorder can cluster with both drug abuse and antisocial behavior. People with this disorder typically display grandiosity, selfishness/self-centeredness, exploitation of others, beliefs about being gifted and special, arrogance, an excessive preoccupation with self and personal appearances, and the need to have others affirm how special they are. Sometimes these qualities are difficult to separate from antisocial behavior, but key differences center around the criminal behavior and the ability to inflict physical cruelty found in antisocial behavior. Effective treatment for Narcissistic Personality Disorder includes cognitive behavioral therapy as well. [Pg.66]

For most judges, sentencing a person who has been convicted of a crime is a difficult decision. In the majority of jurisdictions throughout the country, judges have few sentencing options from which to choose. Generally, their options are confined to a fine, probation, or incarceration. Crimes, however, cover a wide spectrum of criminal behavior and motivation, and a wide variety of sanctions should be available. [Pg.71]

Although food additives have been blamed for a variety of ills, including epileptic seizures, brain tumors, and even criminal behavior, only a few of the approximately 2,800 food additives used in the United States have ever been directly linked to adverse events. New food additives undergo extensive safety testing prior to approval, and existing additives suspected of causing health... [Pg.145]

Other common, but less clinically significant, sex chromosome aneuploidies are the 47,XXX (1/1,000 females) and 47,XYY (1/1,000 males) karyotypes. The former karyotype is associated with increased stature and a mild decrease in IQ, and the latter is associated with increased stature, mild decrease in IQ, acne, and a susceptibility to impulsive behavior (early studies suggesting a propensity to violent criminal behavior have not been substantiated). [Pg.314]

The DEA currently believes that physicians and pharmacists are the primary forces that allow this criminal behavior to occur. It is their easy access to these controlled substances that creates a pipeline of drug distribution to criminals who sell them on the street. [Pg.248]

The personal cost of dependence on prescription sedative-hypnotics is high. Aside from the short- or longterm health effects, physical or psychological dependence may lead to family discord, job loss, birth defects in infants born to addicted mothers, and even criminal behavior and incarceration in individuals who purchase these drugs illicitly. [Pg.472]

Some people use honeynets to investigate cyber-criminal behavior and to discover new types of cyber-attacks. We should mention that a honeynet is a computer network created especially to attract cyber-attacks. Whenever a honeynet is attacked, lots of information is collected and then analyzed in order to better understand the cyber-criminals activity. A key step in protecting a network is to detect defects in the defense systems and removing them immediately. [Pg.194]

Although not everyone becomes severely addicted to opiate pain relievers, there are certain people for whom the drugs become irresistible. The addiction may drive these ordinarily upstanding individuals to criminal behavior to satisfy their craving and compulsive need for these medications. [Pg.54]

The clinical syndrome of mania is commonly associated with increased irritability, aggressiveness, physical violence, and a variety of antisocial and criminal behaviors (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000, pp. 357-362). Many studies of antidepressant-induced mania involve aggression. [Pg.155]

We have noted how costs associated with criminal behavior are especially significant for drug abuse. The association of alcohol, drugs, and crime is one we seem to see and hear about continually in the popular media. [Pg.28]

No connection between cannabis and unpremeditated criminal behavior could be substantiated. The view that such a relationship existed was based on the fact that those who used cannabis drags to excess were usually people from low social and economic status groups. [Pg.66]
