Flies stimulated by apple odors turned into the wind and walked steadily or took short hopping flights toward the source. The activity was systematically traced to a GLC fraction containing hexyl acetate (34%), ( )-2-hexen-l-yl acetate (< 2%), butyl 2-methylbutanoate (8%), propyl hexanoate (12%), hexyl propanoate (5%), butyl hexanoate (28%), and hexyl butanoate (10%). In a wind tunnel, this mixture of volatiles caught as many flies as the original extract. None of the components elicited full activity when presented alone. [Pg.141]
