The proportion of recycled municipal waste has been increasing, but this has been offset almost completely by an increase in municipal waste generation. As a result, landfill is only reducing slowly. For example, the amount of plastic waste going to landfill increased by 21.7% between 1990 and 2002, even though the percentage of plastic waste being landfilled dropped from 77% to 62%. 

Hospital A and the nursing home have a high percentage of plastics, and hospital B and the animal research facility have high percentages of pathological (infectious) waste. 

Since the wastes from hospital A and the nursing home contain a high percentage of plastics, excessive acid gas emissions are possible. Therefore, acid gas emissions control should be considered. 

Since a high percentage of plastics occurs in the waste stream fed to the incinerator, a suitable method of treating the acid gases produced must be chosen. This may entail reacting the acid gases with an alkaline material. Therefore, a spray dryer should be considered to neutralize the acid gases.

Recently, artificial teeth made of plastics and ceramics have seen growing application in elderly patients, especially in developed countries. There are nearly one million pieces of artificial teeth manufactured in Japan (Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan, 2010), and the total number worldwide is reported to be 3 billion. Artificial teeth should be harmless to human health and designed to harmonize with the tissues in the oral cavity. They must also have the functional properties for chewing. Intrinsically, plastic teeth have more harmonized properties than ceramic teeth, and hence the percentage of plastic teeth (80%) in Japan is expected to increase in the future.

Similar results were obtained for cellulose acetate for which Rockwell hardness had linear correlation with the percentage of plasticizer in formulation. Shore A hardness of PVC/acrylate copolymer blends decreases with amounts of plasticizers but also incompatible liquids such as silicone oil. ... 

Other factors that directly affect the skid resistance are tyre pattern and tyre resilience (high or low percentage of plastic/elastic material). The smoother the tyre surface, the greater the reduction of skid resistance as vehicle speed increases. The higher the percentage of plastic incorporated in the tyre, the lesser the skid resistance on rough surfaces (Sabey 1966). 

The Association of Plastics Manufacturers in Europe (APME) tracks plastics recycling statistics for the overall European market. Plastics will continue to follow a steady growth path in automotive applications, but that will not dramatically improve the total weight percentage of plastics consumed by the automotive industy. This scenario is likely to change only if fuel costs continue to rise and alternative fuels are not bringing any relief to the general public.

Even if the percentage of plastics waste used as a filler cannot be high, its common use may absorb sizable amounts of wastes. As an example, in Italy, a blending of 10% of mixed plastics waste with non-food thermoplastics, excluding those for film manufacturing, could utilize 172,000 t/years, that is about 75% of all the plastic bottles manufactured every year in our country. It should be thus possible to fully satisfy the recycling objectives of the Italian law that requires a 40% recycling in 1992. 

Thermoplastics are the primary plastic piping material in use today. They account for the largest percentage of plastic pipe in use and have the widest range of applications. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) makes up the majority of the thermoplastic piping market polyethylene is the second most popular.

An electrode sensitive to both cationic and anionic surfactants can be made from a glass tube sealed at the bottom with a membrane of poly(vinylchloride) containing a high percentage of plasticizer, 40% or more. Dissolved in the plasticized PVC is a surfactant ion pair, such as hexadecyltrimethylammonium dodecylsulfate. The tube is filled with a dilute solution of anionic surfactant with a small amount of a chloride salt, into which a silver/ silver chloride electrode is inserted. For potential measurements in solutions, the circuit is completed with a reference electrode such as saturated calomel. Commercial surfactant-selective electrodes based on PVC membranes have been available since approximately 1990.
