Pellets of such oxides are usually prepared by mixing 5—10 wt % of the oxide with KBr and pressing a pellet that is several mm thick. Although the preparation of such systems is not difficult, often the pellet must be pressed for long periods of time to allow the KBr to fuse around the oxide particulates. Once prepared, in spectra of these pellets can be acquired in standard KBr pellet holders. [Pg.285]

Nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, referred to as nitro-aromatic compounds hereafter, constitute one of the most troubling classes of environmental pollutants. They are derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that contain two or more fused aromatic rings made of carbon and hydrogen atoms and at least one nitro group (Fig. 10.1). Concern about these compounds arises partly from their ubiquity nitro-aromatic compounds are released to the environment directly from a variety of incomplete combustion processes [1] and are also formed in situ by atmospheric reactions of PAHs [2]. Nitro-aromatic compounds have been found in grilled food in diesel, gasoline, and wood-smoke emissions and are commonly found in atmospheric particulate matter, natural waters, and sediment [3-8],... [Pg.218]

The outstanding property of fused rocks is their high resistance to abrasion and corrosion. For instance, fused basalt products show a service life 4—10 times longer than that of steel when employed as components of equipment used in the transport of particulate materials, which thus makes them an attractive substitute for metals. [Pg.333]

In other cases, stationary phases have been tailored to achieve specific separations. In one case, a new stationary phase was designed to achieve the separation of a particular mixture of volatile priority water pollutants whose separation has posed a real problem (6, 7). A serendipitous finding was that this new stationary phase, DB-1301, also promises to be very useful for the separation of some chlorinated pesticides. Nor have we reached the end of this road an Immobilized form of 2330, with utility for those Interested In dioxins, In positional Isomers of the fatty acids, and In other challenging separations, will soon be available. Fused silica columns with bonded particulate materials, reminiscent of the old PLOT-type columns, are also available. The primary utility of the PLOT-type columns currently available Is for fixed gas analysis, but newer types on the horizon will permit a choice of adsorptive-type separations, partition-type separations, or a combination of both. [Pg.59]
