Permanent paper, manufacture

We also expect our business partners -paper mills, printers, packaging manufacturers, etc. - to commit themselves to using materials and production processes that do not harm the environment. The paper in this book is made from low- or no-chlorine pulp and is acid free, in conformance with international standards for paper permanency. 

The question of paper permanence is concerned primarily with the stability of cellulose fibers. Pure cellulose in its native state is a very stable material. Cellulose textile fibers have been preserved under favorable conditions for long periods without loss of integrity. It has been observed that many papers manufactured 100 to 200 years ago from cotton or linen fibers have retained their essential usefulness. 

A more permanent installation is provided by a chain-driven sampler, widely used in paper (qv) and steel (qv) mills, manufactured as the E Sampler by QCEC (20). A cup, which is attached to a chain positioned perpendicular to flow, travels down through the Hquid flow and returns to the upper sprocket, where the sample is drained into a container. Flow-proportional timers can be installed to change the rate of sampling with flow rate (see Flow l asurel nt). 

Poly(vinyl acetate) is too soft and shows excessive cold flow for use in moulded plastics. This is no doubt associated with the fact that the glass transition temperature of 28°C is little above the usual ambient temperatures and in fact in many places at various times the glass temperature may be the lower. It has a density of 1.19 g/cm and a refractive index of 1.47. Commercial polymers are atactic and, since they do not crystallise, transparent (if free from emulsifier). They are successfully used in emulsion paints, as adhesives for textiles, paper and wood, as a sizing material and as a permanent starch . A number of grades are supplied by manufacturers which differ in molecular weight and in the nature of comonomers (e.g. vinyl maleate) which are commonly used (see Section 14.4.4)... 

The publisher s policy is to use permanent paper from mills that operate a sustainable forestry policy, and which has been manufactured from pulp processed using acid-free and elementary chlorine-free practices. Furthermore, the publisher ensures that the text paper and cover board used have met acceptable environmental accreditation standards.
