Adsorption paper manufacture

Use Refractories, especially for steel furnace linings, poly crystalline ceramic for aircraft windshields, electrical insulation, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, inorganic rubber accelerator, oxychloride and oxysulfate cements, paper manufacture, fertilizers, removal of sulfur dioxide from stack gases, adsorption and catalysis, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, food and feed additive. [Pg.779]

OTHER COMMENTS magnesium oxide may be used in the manufacture of refractories, particularly for linings of steel furnaces use as a reflector in optical instruments, in the removal of sulfur dioxide from stack gases, and in adsorption and catalysis other uses include pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, electrical insulation, and paper manufacture. [Pg.707]

Nearly all retention aid systems used in paper manufacturing contain a high-molecular-weight polymer as a key component. The adsorption of polymers at the surfaces of fibres, fines and fillers in the papermaking... [Pg.132]

A unique active carbon having very high surface areas over 2500 m / gm, and extraordinary adsorptive capacities was developed in our laboratories. (1) This paper will describe its development, manufacture, properties, and uses. Until recently, samples of this carbon, which were provided worldwide for research and evaluation, were identified as Amoco Grades PX-21, 22, 23, and 24 in the powdered form and Amoco GX-31 and 32 in granular form. The carbon is made (Figure 1) by a direct chemical activation route in which petroleum coke or other carbonaceous sources are reacted with excess potassium hydroxide, KOH, at 400° to 500°C to an intermediate product that is subsequently pyrolyzed at 800°-900°C to active carbon and potassium salts. The salts are removed by water washing. [Pg.310]

The introduction of a range of user-friendly equipment and software has accompanied the present widespread use of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. Advances have been made in the development of both routine experimental procedures and on-line processing of the adsorption isotherm data. However, there is now a risk that an unskilled operator may gain the impression that with the aid of a manufacturer s user-friendly software it is relatively easy to evaluate the specific surface area and the pore size distribution of the material under examination. Furthermore, the ready access to sophisticated computational procedures may tend to obscure the limitations of the theoretical models on which they are based. The aims of this paper are to draw attention to these problems and to indicate how further progress can be made in the analysis of nitrogen isotherms on porous carbons. [Pg.421]

With the manufacture and use of steroids in pharmaceutical and contraceptive preparations increasing steadily, the quantities appearing in rivers and other natural waters are beginning to be a cause for concern. A report has now appeared on the identification and estimation of steroids in water. With 500 references, it is a useful source of information on analytical methods. The extent of interference by various cholestane derivatives in cholesterol determinations has been evaluated. Of five methods examined, none is wholly specific to cholesterol. Poor reproducibility in steroid solubility determinations can result from adsorption by filter papers. The g.l.c. retention times of an extensive series of sterols have been measured on four different stationary phases, in order to devise methods for the separation of particular mixtures. Some mixtures of saturated compounds with the corresponding unsaturated A -, A -, A -, A -, or A -sterols could not be separated, but A -, A -, and some dienic derivatives are easily separable from their isomers. The results were applied in the examination of sterols in sunflower and other plant oils. The... [Pg.286]

Our previous papers [15,16] and the current work show that die imprinting of mesophase pitch particles with colloidal silica is an efficient technique to prepare mesoporous carbons with uniform spherical pores as well as carbons with bimodal pore size distributions. These carbons exhibit negligible amount of micropores, which can be further eliminated during graphitization process. If micropores are need, they can be created by controlled oxidation analogous to that used in the preparation of activated carbon fibers. The possibility of tailoring the size of uniform spherical mesopores is of great importance for catalysis, adsorption and other advanced applications such as die manufacture of hi -quaiity electrochemical double-layer capacitors, fuel cells and lidiium batteries. [Pg.139]

Some rubbery materials adhere firmly to themselves (autohesive tack or auto-hesion) or to a different surface (adhesive tack) after brief contact imder light pressure. They have a liquid character which results in rapid bond formation, yet, without setting, they resist detachment like a solid, ie, they are sfrong and soft. (Tacky substances are stroft, like toilet paper.) Typically, adhesive tack involves bonding to a hard substrate and interdiffusion is absent or minimal. Adsorption is the principal mechanism of adhesion. On the other hand, autohesion involves both molecular contact and interdiffusion. Autohesion is important in the manufacture of articles, such as tires, which are built by laminating rubbery components. [Pg.327]
