Paint titanium dioxide

The most important compound of titanium is titanium dioxide (Ti02). In 2008, about 1,650,000 short tons (1,500,000 metric tons) of this compound were produced in the United States. The amount produced totaled about 3.7 billion. Titanium dioxide is a dense white powder with excellent hiding power. That term means that anything beneath it cannot be seen well. This property accounts for the major use of titanium dioxide making white paint. Titanium dioxide paint is a good choice for painting over old wallpaper or dark paints because it covers so well. In 2008, nearly 60 percent of the titanium dioxide produced in the United States was used in paints. [Pg.624]

If the normal carbonate is used, the basic carbonate or white lead, Pb(OH),. 2PbCO,. is precipitated. The basic carbonate was used extensively as a base in paints but is now less common, having been largely replaced by either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Pigment Dispersion. The alkan olamines and thek derivatives are useful in dispersing titanium dioxide and other pigments (209). Paints. Paints account for perhaps 3% of sulfur consumption (see Paint). The main sulfur use is for the production of titanium dioxide pigment by the sulfate process. Sulfuric acid reacts with ilmenite or titanium slag and the sulfur remains as a ferrous sulfate waste product. Paint pigments do not change colors on appHcation. Other common colors are violet from cobalt(II) phosphate [18475-47-3] pink from cobalt and magnesium oxides, aureolin yellow from potassiuim cobalt(III) nitrite [13782-01-9], KCo(N02)4, and cerulean blue from cobalt staimate [6546-12-5]. Large quantities of cobalt are used at levels of a few ppm to decolori2e or whiten glass and ceramics. Iron oxide or titanium dioxide often impart a yellow tint to various domestic ware.
