There are potential quality assurance problems with the analysis of PCAs at trace levels in environmental samples because of their use in some consumer products like PVC or paints, and in metal cutting oils. Standard precautions used for the analysis of PCBs and other organochlorines such as use of glass distilled solvents, high temperature heating of filters, glassware, and sodium sulfate, and minimal use of plastics, should also minimize contamination by PCAs. This contamination is potentially more difficult to control under field conditions where PCAs maybe incorporated into outdoor paints and sealants or may be residues on or in sampling equipment. [Pg.217]

A ballast tank filled with seawater is easily corroded. Corrosion protection by the paint on the metal surface inside the tank, which improves the insulation for the corrosion current, is conducted. The paint has problems with age-related degradation and incipient failure. To protect from the corrosion caused by these problems, plural sacrificial anodes are usually installed in the tank. When seawater is loaded in the tank, the surface of the inside tank becomes cathode and the protective potential works, because of the anode effects. The worse the coating condition becomes, the worse the insulation of the paint becomes and the lower the surface resistance becomes. Therefore, there is the possibility that the coating condition can be evaluated with the monitoring of the surface resistance. [Pg.80]

Problems with Blending. The principle of this approach to optimizing paint rheology is that two paints with the same Stormer viscosity will produce blends with the same Stormer viscosity. In practice, this result does not always occur. For example, a 50/50 HEUR/organoclay-thickened paint made from base paints at 100 KU each may have a Stormer viscosity of only 90 KU. This result often occurs when one of the base paints is very thixotropic. Also, a paint blend may have poorer flow and leveling than either of the base paints. Poor flow indicates that some flocculation may occur during the blending process. [Pg.535]
