However, when it comes to the more important 2,2-diaryl derivatives (1.25), the routes illustrated in Figure 1.7 are not very useful. For these derivatives the almost universally adopted synthetic method involves the reaction of a l,l-diarylprop-2-yn-l-ol (1.24) with a substituted phenol or naphthol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The acid catalyst can be alumina, an acidic clay or Nafion for heterogeneous reactions, or trifluoroacetic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid and dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid for reactions carried out in solution. The alkynols are prepared by reaction of a benzophenone (1.22) with a Na or Li derivative of an alkynide, such as the trimethylsilyl acetylide (1.23), (Figure 1.8). ... [Pg.16]

Effective catalysts for preparing the polyformals were p-toluenesulfonic acid, camphorsulfonic acid, methanedisulfonic acid, and perchloric acid. Various other acidic compounds were evaluated as catalysts with tetramethylcyclobutanediol. In these experiments, 0.5 to 1.0 gram of acidic compound per mole of tetramethylcyclobutanediol was normally added. If insufficient water was obtained, more catalyst was added. If the prepolymer was obtained but an appreciable amount of brown color was present, less catalyst was then used. Compounds which did not catalyze the reaction (no water obtained) were phosphoric acid, zinc chloride, trifluoroacetic acid, and heptafluorobutyric acid. Incomplete reactions (insufficient water) took place with concentrated hydrochloric acid, concentrated nitric acid, zinc fluoroborate, or Amberlite IRC-50 ion exchange resin as catalyst. A prepolymer was obtained when boron trifluoride etherate was used, but buildup did not take place in the solid phase (catalyst probably too volatile). Brown or speckled-brown polymers (after solid-phase buildup) were obtained with catalysts containing sulfonic acid groups (benzenesulfonic, dodecylbenzenesulfonic, sulfo-acetic, methanetrisulfonic, sulfuric, p-toluenesulfonic, camphorsulfonic, and methanedisulfonic acids). To obtain white polymers from tetramethylcyclobutanediol it was necessary to treat the solvent and prepolymer reaction mixture as previously described. (White polyformals were obtained from the other diols without this treatment.)... [Pg.206]

Cationic polymerization can also be performed in direct miniemulsion in the presence of water. p-Methoxystyrene (p-MOS) was polymerized using the inisurf (= initiator - - surfactant) dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid with a monomer [91]. In the presence of ytterbium triflate, inverse systems were formed [92]. Although the rate of polymerization was found to be slower than for direct systems, the molecular weights obtained were shown to be larger. The polymerization was initiated by l-chloro-l-(p-methoxyphenyl)ethane (p-MOS-HCl), and catalyzed by trisdodecyl sulfate ytterbium, which served simultaneously as a surfactant and as a Lewis acid [93]. The Lewis acid surfactant did not play the expected role, however, as the p-MOS-HCl was hydrolyzed. The resulting hydronium protonated the SDS surfactant, which then served as an inisurf in the interfacial cationic polymerization process. [Pg.460]
