Overall efficiency Introduction

Figure 9 shows a modern air-separation plant with front-end cleanup and product liquefaction. Production of such plants can exceed 2800 tons per day of liquid oxygen with an overall efficiency of about 15 to 20% of the theoretical optimum. The recent introduction of molecular sieve technology has provided an arrangement that increases the product to about 85% of the air input to the compressor. Thus, there has been a strong tendency over the past decade to retrofit older air-separation plants with this new arrangement to improve the process. [Pg.180]

Since their introduction in 1996-1997, regional placement offices have been subject to more or less constant scrutiny and evaluation. Their performance in terms of their capacity to reduce unemployment lines has been monitored throughout their existence, and the information thus collected used to develop incentive systems that are supposed to improve their overall efficiency. [Pg.152]

Sensitivity is assessed by comparing signal level and stability of the background with analyte response. In early ICP/MS instruments, response was on the order of 106 ion counts/s per part-per-million (ug/mL) of analyte in a solution introduced at a flow rate of 1 mL/min. This is an analyte introduction rate of 1 ug/min, or 1014 atoms/s for the analyte 100Mo. The overall efficiency is thus 10 8 given 106 counts/s vs. 1014 atoms/s from the sample. Research and development has led to efficiencies that have steadily increased over the years. State-of-the-art instruments and high efficiency sample introduction systems can now achieve 10 3 (0.1 percent) overall efficiency in terms of counts detected per atom in the sample. Champion efficiencies as large as 0.5 percent have been reported (Rehkamper et al., 2001). For comparison, TIMS champion efficiencies are 1 and 5 percent, for uranium and plutonium, respectively. [Pg.389]

Sample introduction into the gas chromatograph is the first stage in the chromatographic process. It is of primary importance, especially in capillary GC, because its efficiency is reflected in the overall efficiency of the separation procedure and the quantitative results. The basic prerequisite of the sample injection system is that the sample should be introduced into the column as a narrow band, ideally with maintenance of constant pressure and flow. The specially designed inlet should be hot enough to flash-evaporate the... [Pg.988]

This procedure for the synthesis of ethyl 3-nitroacrylate is essentially that of Stevens and Emmons.2 Four major changes have been introduced by the submitters rapid introduction of dinitrogen tetroxide no purification of the intermediate nitro iodo ester use of dry, finely powdered sodium acetate for elimination of hydroiodic acid and percolation of the final product through a mat of alumina. With these modifications, the preparation is reproducible and highly efficient (80-90% overall). [Pg.67]

Durability. Durability can be a useful way of improving eco-efiiciency. A product that has a long useful life minimises the impact per unit of service in the overall life cycle. However, there needs to be a balance, as a durable product with a poor environmental performance may block the introduction of a more eco-efficient technology. In many cases, governments have been driven to use fiscal incentives to encourage the adoption of a more environmentally friendly product because of the installed base of older but durable technologies. [Pg.59]

The most efficient system devised by Monsanto uses electrodes fabricated from carbon steel plate, electro-coated on one face with cadmium. These are stacked in parallel so that the electrolyte can be pumped through the gap between successive plates. Overall tire system forms a series of electrochemical cells with a cadmium cathode and a carbon steel anode. Each plate of metal forms the cathode of one cell and the anode of the next in the stack. Electric current is passed across the stack. The electrolyte contains phosphate and borate salts as corrosion inhibitors, EDTA to chelate any cadmium and iron ions generated by corrosion together with hex-amethylenebis(ethyldibutylammonium) phosphate to provide the necessary telraal-kylammonium ions. This electrolyte circulates through the cell from a reservoir and there is provision for the introduction of acjylonitrile and water as feedstock. The overall cell reaction is ... [Pg.65]
