Other Precautions

Location of process units and machineries on different floors shall have sufficient escape routes for persons working near dangerous units (pressure vessels, high-temperature reactors, and process units which can release gases from openings). 

Ease of operation—Control valves shall be easily accessible work platforms shall be available at field instruments, near inspection windows and cleaning manholes for reactors, heat exchangers, and absorption towers. 

Working space shall be available around the process units for cleaning or for taking out any damaged internals, for maintenance of the unit. 

Escape routes, staircases, and railings shall also be provided at appropriate places. Alternate lights in plant shall be given supply from alternate power feeders. This wiU prevent total darkness in the plant in case of power failure of one feeder. There shall be easy approach to diesel/gas generator sets for the supply of power in case of need (for emergency power supply) when grid power fails. However, these sets shall start automatically whenever grid power supply fails. 

Provide dust extractors for crashers and grinders at appropriate locations with cyclones and bag filters.

The Smith predictor is a model-based control strategy that involves a more complicated block diagram than that for a conventional feedback controller, although a PID controller is still central to the control strategy (see Fig. 8-37). The key concept is based on better coordination of the timing of manipulated variable action. The loop configuration takes into account the facd that the current controlled variable measurement is not a result of the current manipulated variable action, but the value taken 0 time units earlier. Time-delay compensation can yield excellent performance however, if the process model parameters change (especially the time delay), the Smith predictor performance will deteriorate and is not recommended unless other precautions are taken. 

This is a location which is continuously contaminated with explosive gases, chemical vapours or volatile liquids and thus is highly susceptible to fire hazards. Installation of electrical machines in such areas should be avoided as far as possible, to reduce cost, facilitate maintenance and take other precautions.

In any case, the OEL-STEL is not a separate, independent exposure limit rather, it supplements the OEL-TWA and is intended to be used in normal work situations, not for emergencies. However, the OEL-STEL needs to be complemented by other precautions for substances that may be lethal at very high concentrations and for substances whose toxic or irritant effects are pronounced upon exposure to high concentrations for very short periods. 

Errors also occur because people deliberately decide not to carry out instructions that they consider unnecessary or incorrect. These are called violations. For example, they may not wear all the protective clothing or take the other precautions specified on a permit-to-w ork, as discussed in Section 1.4.2. OTHER PRECAUTIONS Avoid extreme temperatures (e.g., 160 F or higher) during storage. 

Myasthenia gravis Procainamide administration in myasthenia gravis patients may be hazardous without optimal adjustment of anticholinesterase medications and other precautions. Immediately after initiation of therapy, closely observe patients for muscular weakness if myasthenia gravis is a possibility. 

Hypersensitivity reactions As with all biologic products, have epinephrine and other precautions available if anaphylactic reaction occurs. 

If dissimilar materials with significantly different eiectrochemical potentials are placed in contact in the presence of an electrolytic solution, galvanic couples can be created that can result in serious corrosion of the less noble material. The vendor shall select materials to avoid conditions that may result in galvanic corrosion. Where such conditions cannot be avoided, the purchaser and the vendor shall agree on the material selection and any other precautions necessary. The NACE Corrosion Engineer s Reference Book is one source for selection of suitable materials in these situations. 

Procedure. To form a BLM, a small amount (.— 0.005 ml.) of lipid solution was applied via a Teflon capillary attached to a micrometer syringe. The formation characteristics leading to the black state were observed under reflected light at 20-40 X magnification. Other precautions that should be exercised are essentially those described previously (10). The bifacial tension of BLM was measured as follows. After the membrane had become completely black (except at the Plateau-Gibbs border), the infusion-withdrawal pump was started. The pressure difference across the BLM was continuously monitored and reached a maximum when the membrane was hemispherical. The interfacial tension was calculated from this point using Equation 3. 

The experiments of the "safety in Mines Research Board (Gt Britain) conducted since 1924 have shown that the above recommendations are not sufficient to ensure safety in all coal mines. New regulations were drafted and they included, among other precautions, the provision of stopping zones heavily treated with stone dust, ash or water and overhead barriers loaded with stone dust or water (Ref 12, pll9)...

Other precautions must be taken to prevent accidental or occasional increases in concentrations. Materials should be transported in safe containers, spilled material removed rapidly, and floor and wall materials selected to prevent contamination and allow easy cleaning.
