Oral reports

Presentation of Results. A wide variety of procedures and techniques are used to present results of market research. The technique used varies by type of study, by the source of the study within a company, and from company to company. In broadest terms, both written and oral reports cover almost every possibiUty. 

Oral reports usually involve use of either sHdes or flip charts as visual aids. It has been found that more executives will attend an oral report presentation than will read a 100-page written report. Combiaations and variations of oral and written reports are also widely used. For example, both consultants and ia-house groups often present a brief oral executive summary with or without visual aids several weeks ia advance of the written report. 

Because of this, it s sensible to consider regular documentation as opposed to relying solely on oral reports or informal hallway updates. Even if your sponsors don t require much formal reporting, internal documentation of the group process can help keep the process itself on track and can also provide the foundation for documentation of the end results. 

The team presented its findings to the plant management and to the corporate safety department orally and handed out lists of the causes, the trees, the recommendations, and the criteria for restart. Management accepted the oral report and appointed the operations manager to be responsible for seeing that the action points were completed.

Student grades in this course are based on written and oral reports. Each student presents two oral reports and turns in two written reports. It is important to present the results of these analyses in a clear and concise fashion. Most administrators will require that written and/or oral reports are presented on a regular basis. These reports should describe how the program is doing relative to stated objectives and goals. 

Catalyst characterization is a lively and highly relevant discipline in catalysis, with the literature revealing a clear desire to work with defined materials. For example, about 80% of the 143 oral reports at the 11th International Congress on Catalysis [15] contained at least some results on the catalyst(s) obtained by characterization techniques, whereas only 20% of these reports dealt with catalytic reactions over uncharacterized catalysts. Another remarkable fact obtained from these statistics is that about 10% of the reports included the results of theoretical calculations. Clearly, the modern trend is to approach catalysis from many different viewpoints, using a combination of sophisticated experimental and theoretical tools.

Two months after Cavendish read his paper to the Royal Society, Le Due communicated the contents of this same discovery to James Watt, the inventor, who had likewise been interested in experiments on the nature of water. In consequence of this communication, Watt transmitted a report to the same Society, claiming its discovery as early as April of the preceding year. Lavoisier laid claim to its discovery on the basis of an oral report submitted in conjunction with Laplace to the French Academy in June, 1783. An oral report is simply a conversation—with attention to some constraints imposed by the situation. If, as you are walking down the hall, the boss asks, How s the project coming , your response is basically an oral report. Rather than have, say, a dozen such strolls—to talk with everyone who might have an interest or a stake in your work, it is more practical to talk to all of them at once. So why is this situation so much more fraught with terror than the former It need not be. What is different about it For one, with more people in the room you have to make eye contact with more than one person. Because they are further away from you, you have to speak louder. And since sound waves dampen rather quickly, you need to enunciate clearly so that even the last row will understand you. You also may not know the expectations or biases of all of your listeners, so it is best to err on the side of caution and to dress formally and maybe speak a little more formally than in everyday conversation. And the same holds true for the level of formality and quality of visuals or other materials. But these are all practical accommodations dictated by the situation.

There is no required procedure for self-reporting under the Enforcement Response PoHcies. As part of this task students were asked to take the role of an expert in atmospheric sciences and to prepare a report about one of the causes of air pollution. One s success at this transfer hinges on presenting the type, detail, and scope of information that the audience expects with a clarity that avoids misunderstandings.
