36 Golden rice and the prevalence of Vitamin A deficiency (red clinical green Vitamin A deficiency under control blue no data available). [Pg.640]

The golden rice project was conducted in order to combat Vitamin A deficiency, which is stiU prevalent in many parts of the world, but most frequently found in nearly aU coimtries in Africa and in India. According to a WHO study, it is estimated that Vitamin A deficiency affects at least 190 million young children and 19 million pregnant women per year. This malnutrition leads to an annual rate of 1-2 million deaths, 500,000 cases of irreversible blindness and millions of cases of xerophthalmia. [87] [Pg.640]

Vitamin A and the carotenoids are products of the terpene metabolism. Industrial manufacturing processes are based on modular building blocks. Universal methods to couple these building blocks are the Wittig reaction, the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction, the sulfone coupling according to Julia, the Muller-Cunradi enol ether condensation and the Saucy-Marbet rearrangement. [Pg.640]

The first reports on rickets in infants originate from Soranus of Ephesus, a Greek physician, who practiced in Alexandria and subsequently in Rome at about 100 AD. As we know nowadays, rickets predominant cause is a deficiency or impaired metabolism of Vitamin D. Partiorlarly in malnourished children, this results in the disruption of growth and softening and deformation of the bones, as a consequence of insufficient mineralisation of the coUagen matrix (Fig. 7.37). [Pg.641]

As first comprehensively described [88] in 1645 by Daniel Whistler (1619-1684) in his doctoral thesis De morbo pueriUi anglorum , rickets had grown in the wake of industrialisation to a major health problem across aU of northern Europe and North America. The urbanisation of a society, previously shaped by agriculture, led to circumstances, which were conducive to the so-called English Disease (Fig. 7.38). [Pg.641]

Antioxidant additives can not totally prevent the oxidation phenomenon, especially with the modern trend in oil-change intervals at the end of the interval, oil contains a significant quantity of insoluble oxidized material. [Pg.358]

The modern trend is for overhead costs to become an increasing proportion of total product costs. This results from the ever-greater sophistication of process plants. Therefore, it is highly desirable that chemical engineers should have some say in the location of overheads and that this should not be left entirely to accountants. [Pg.846]

For an adequate barrier against moisture, sufficient thickness of paint must be applied. The modern trend is to apply high-build coatings based on media having high intrinsic water resistance. Such paints may be pigmented with corrosion inhibitors or minerals which impede the flow of moisture through the film. [Pg.637]

The implications of the foregoing concept have profoundly influenced modern trends in polymer research. If polymers owe their differences from other compounds to the extent and arrangement of their primary valence structures, the problem of understanding them is twofold. It is necessary in the first place to provide appropriate means, both experimental and theoretical, for elucidating their macromolecular structures a[Pg.3]

Another modern trend is the increased sale of filled rolls and prepacked sandwiches. The sale of filled rolls provides many small bakers with a very satisfactory source of profit. The manufacture of pre-packed sandwiches is now a large industry, consuming large quantities of bread. Such sales growth is obviously caused by a population that is short of time rather than money. [Pg.3]

One of the modern trends in heterocyclic synthesis is illustrated by the synthesis of aminopyrans from UNs 30 and acetoacetic ester 36, immobilized on a homogenic substrate - ionic liquid 57, highly soluble in... [Pg.189]

The experimental simplicity of Method 3 has attracted the specialists in modern trends in catalysis. Thus, in Method 3 different authors used RbF (04SC4431), MgO (09EJM3805), KF/AI2O3, mixed magnesium-aluminum carbonate, or mixed magnesium-lanthanum oxide (08TL2730) in methanol. Recently, 2-aminopyran syntheses with acetylacetone 35 and ethyl acetoacetate 36 were carried out in an ionic liquid [(bmim)(BF4), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium borofluoride] with 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine as... [Pg.199]

Another modern trend is the development of laboratory courses based on multi-week projects, involving not just one subdiscipline of chemistry but two or more. Such laboratory courses have been labeled Integrated Laboratories . They are motivated in part by the belief that this type of integrated approach more closely models the way real chemical research is done and will provide stronger motivation for students than the more traditional one-subject laboratory courses. [Pg.131]
