Although metallic antimony may be handled freely without danger, it is recommended that direct skin contact with antimony and its alloys be avoided. Properly designed exhaust ventilation systems and/or approved respirators are required for operations that create dusts or fumes. Acid used in the formation process is removed from the batteries and reused. The batteries are washed, fresh acid is added, and the batteries are tested, re-washed, and inspected before being shipped to an on-site warehouse. The intermediate and final washes generate process wastewater, as do the battery repair and housekeeping (floor washing) operations. This wastewater Is pretreated on-site and then piped to the local publicly owned treatment works (POTW). 

Whether floor space is a major factor in the design of a particular plant depends on the value of land near the proposed site. The engineer should, however, allot floor space economically, consistent with good housekeeping in the plant and should be sure to consider line flow of materials, access to equipment, space to permit working on parts of equipment that need frequent servicing, and the safety and comfort of the operators. 

Energy can be conserved by operation of plant in such a way as to minimize part loading. Various practices can be adopted that can be described as good housekeeping . In addition to maintenance, this will include such factors as the avoidance of plant operating in the standby mode for long periods, operation at correct temperature, ensuring doors are closed where applicable, etc. 

With regard to operational considerations, the recirculation pump pressure gauges (which measure pressure differentials and consequently indicate possible blockage in the coiled tube) require frequent calibration. Regular cleaning and good housekeeping are also required, especially within the furnace area. 

The laboratory operator should establish the rules for housekeeping and set a good example for all who work there. When working on a project, he should put all reagents and equipment back into proper storage. It is a great morale builder when workers see that the boss cleans up his own mess. Besides, they will quickly come to his assistance should he be in a bind. Far too many laboratory supervisors will routinely walk away from the debris of an experiment or a test and expect others to clean it up. 

Segregation is practised to allow for housekeeping, construction and maintenance requirements and to reduce the risk of an accident resulting in a domino effect , e.g. from a fire, explosion or toxic release. For very toxic substances, e.g. prussic acid (HCN) or tetraethyl lead, this may involve isolating the entire manufacturing operation in a separate unoccupied building or sealed-off area. 

Workplace safety has been taken care of by the reworking of some classes of additives into more environmentally acceptable forms. Some trends are the increased use of additive concentrates or masterbatches and the replacement of powder versions by uniform pellets or pastilles which release less dust and flow more easily. Moreover, the current move to multicomponent formulations of stabilisers and processing aids in a low- or nondusting product also takes away the risk of operator error, aids quality control, ISO protocols and good housekeeping. An additional benefit is more homogeneous incorporation of the additives in the polymeric matrix.
