Ontogenesis

The ontogenesis of the AOS then, is closely bound up with the formation of its principal connection site within the mature brain. The sequence of events in mammals is revealed as a process which involves (1) early specialisation of presumptive GnRH cells (2) their attachment to and movement along specific (and transient) axonal bundles of the VN and N. terminalis tracts, and (3) coalescence of the neurocrine cells in the hypothalamus, where they complete differentiation as multi-axonal neurocrine cells.

Differences in fucolipid content as between normal and transformed cells, and changes on ontogenesis, have already been discussed, and these effects are presumably due to variations in fucosyltransferase activities, with possible specificity differences, namely, a-(l— 2) to Gal or (1— 3 or 4) to GlcNAc. However, the enzymes involved in these cells have not yet been separated and purified, and information on the separate enzyme-activities involved is almost nonexistent.

There are also changes in the rates of metabolism as red blood cells appear and aerobic processes intensify (Lasker and Theilacker, 1962 Laurence, 1975 Timeyko and Novikov, 1991) during the early phases of ontogenesis. Oxygen consumption increases, as do the number of mitochondria and their protein contents (Abramova and Vasilyeva, 1973 Ozemyuk, 1993). The adenyl nucleotide pool (ATP and ADP) decreases (Milman and Yurovitsky, 1973 Boulekbache, 1981), while the activity of cytochrome oxidase increases (Ozemyuk, 1993). The increased energy metabolism corresponds to a considerable extent with motor activity (Reznichenko, 1980). In the yolk sac, the activity of proteinase, which supplies nitrogenous materials to the embryo, increases, as does the rate of amino acid incorporation into the body proteins.
