The Answer Sheets

For Section I of the test (the multiple-choice questions), you will be provided a test booklet and an answer sheet. The answer sheet is a bubble sheet, and the test booklet contains all of the multiple-choice questions. You are not allowed to use scratch paper on the test, and you will have to put your calculator away. Any extra writing you need to do (e.g., calculations) can be done in the margins of the test booklet—not on the answer sheet As far as the bubble sheet goes, first make sure you re using a 2 pencil—that way, the marks you make will be dark enough for the scoring machine to read. In addition, you must make sure that your answers are neatly bubbled into the ovals. 

For the free-response questions, you will be given a separate packet. The first part of the packet consists of your answer booklet. All answers are to be written here. You will also be given a green packet that contains the questions and a great deal of reference material—a periodic table, a table of standard reduction potentials, and several pages of formulas and constants (shown in the following Tables 1.1 through 1.7).

If you are able to eliminate all but two possible answers, answers such as B and E in the previous example, you may want to guess. Under these conditions, you stand a better chance of raising your score by guessing than by leaving the answer sheet blank. 

This section consists of 75 multiple-choice questions. Mark your answers carefully on the answer sheet. 

Be sure to write your answers for Section I on the separate answer sheet. Use the test booklet for your scratchwork or notes, but remember that no credit will be given for work, notes, or answers written only in the test booklet. Once you have selected an answer, blacken thoroughly the corresponding circle on the answer sheet. To change an answer, erase your previous mark completely, and then record your new answer. Mark only one answer for each question. 

Directions Each group of lettered answer choices below refers to the numbered statements or questions that immediately follow. For each question or statement, select the one lettered choice that is the best answer and fill in the corresponding circle on the answer sheet. An answer choice may be used once, more than once, or not at all in each set of questions. 

Absolutely, positively, check that you are bubbling the same line on the answer sheet as the question you are answering. I suggest that every time you turn the page you double check that you are still lined up correctly. 

Keep track of your place on the answer sheet. If... 

Normally, you would have about three hours for this test however, for now, don t worry about timing. Just take the test in as relaxed a manner as you can. The answer sheet you should use for answering the questions is on the following page. Then comes the exam itself, and after that is the answer key, with each correct answer explained. The answer key is followed by a section on how to score your exam. 

For this third exam, simulate the actual test-taking experience as closely as possible. Find a quiet place to work where you won t be interrupted. Tear out the answer sheet on the next page and find some number 2 pencils. Set a timer or stopwatch, and give yourself three hours for the entire exam. When that time is up, stop, even if you haven t finished the entire test. 

Complete the written post-test, using the answer sheet located at the end of the textbook. 

This may seem obvious, but you must be careful that you fill in the correct answer oval on the answer sheet for each question. Answer sheets can be confusing—so many lines of ovals. So always double-check that you are filling in the correct oval under the correct question number. If you know the correct answer to question 12 but you fill it in under question 11 on the answer sheet, it will be marked as incorrect ... 

During the exam, check periodically (every five to ten questions) to make sure you are transposing your answers to the answer sheet correctly. Look at the question number, then check your answer sheet to see that you are marking the oval by that question number. 

Did you make a careless mistake Careless mistakes include transference errors (marking the wrong oval on the answer sheet) and simple misreading, such as mistaking one word for another. 

Some recent test takers report that they were shocked by the small amount of space they were given on their answer sheet to write the essay. Although you can use the test booklet to take notes and organize your thoughts, only what is written on the answer sheet will count. The practice tests in Chapters 4-6 include the same amount of space you ll encounter when taking the SAT, so you will be able to walk into the test confident that there will be no surprises. 

Directions Each of the questions or incomplete statements below is followed by five answers or completions. Select the one that is best in each case and then fill in the corresponding oval on the answer sheet. 

To take an SAT Subject Test, you will need an admission ticket to enter the exam room and acceptable forms of photo identification. You will also need two number 2 pencils. Be sure that the erasers work well at erasing without leaving smudge marks. The tests are scored by machine, and scoring can be inaccurate if there are smudges or other stray marks on the answer sheet. 

On the answer sheet, you will mark true (T) or false (F) for each statement, and you will mark "correct explanation (CE) ONLY if statement II is a correct explanation of statement I. Here are sample directions for this kind of question, followed by two examples and a sample of a correctly marked answer sheet.
