Oily wastewaters

The Phenox process (254) removes phenol (qv) from the efduent from catalytic cracking in the petroleum industry. Extraction of phenols from ammoniacal coke-oven Hquor may show a small profit. Acetic acid can be recovered by extraction from dilute waste streams (255). Oils are recovered by extraction from oily wastewater from petroleum and petrochemical operations. Solvent extraction is employed commercially for the removal of valuable... [Pg.79]

Kev>erse Osmosis (RO) Membranes A type of membrane system for treating oily wastewater is currently undergoing commercialization by Bend Research, Inc. The system uses a tube-side feed module that yields high fluxes while being able to handle high-sohds-content waste streams (Ref. 25). Another type of reverse osmosis technique is being designed to yield ultrapurified HF recovered from... [Pg.2195]

Segregated oily wastewater is defined as oil waste collected from machine sumps and process tanks. The water is segregated from other wastewaters until it has been treated by an oily waste removal system. Of the plants, 12.4% are known to segregate their oily wastes. The average contribution of these wastes to the total plant wastewater flow is 6.6% (range of approximately 0.0-55.4%). [Pg.350]

In addition to these three treatment options, several alternative technologies are applicable to the treatment of oily wastewater. These include coalescing, flotation, centrifugation, integrated adsorption, resin adsorption, ozonation, chemical oxidation, aerobic decomposition, and thermal emulsion breaking.18-20... [Pg.370]

Oily wastewater is often treated or stored in unlined wastewater treatment ponds in refineries. These wasfes appear to be similar to API separator waste. [Pg.149]

The technology has been demonstrated in pilot-scale and full-scale applications to treat pharmaceutical effluent, oily wastewater, landfill leachate, tanneries effluent, contaminated ground-water, and food effluents. ZenoGem is patented and commercially available. [Pg.1144]

Oily wastewaters are generated during the production, processing, transportation, storage, and use of petroleum and its products. Removal of dispersed oil from water is usually accomplished by... [Pg.213]

Cationic coagulants. Also generally supplied as solution liquids in ranges from 40 to 70% active strength. Low MW of 0.25 to 0.75 M. Useful for reclaiming oily wastewaters use at 150 to 300 ppm typically. [Pg.48]

The technology actually employed in treating a given waste depends upon waste characteristics primarily, but it is also influenced by such other factors as available land area, volume of discharge, and disposition of treated waste. Oil separation, for example, is necessary only for oily wastewater and, among timber products industries, is employed only in the pretreatment of wood preserving wastes. Adjustment of pH is required only if the pH value falls outside the range of 6.0 to 9.0. [Pg.364]

Ultrafiltration — This process has been successful with mixtures difficult to separate, such as oily machining wastes and oily wastewater. A pressure-driven filtration membrane separates multicomponent solutes from solvents, according to molecular size, shape and chemical bonding. Substances below a preselected molecular size are driven through the membrane by hydraulic pressure, while larger molecules, such as oil droplets, are held back. Effluent oil concentration depends on influent concentration, but properly operated ultrafiltration units can produce oilfree water (less than 0.1 ppm for all practical purposes). [Pg.53]

This system normally uses a condenser discharge directly to a hot well and then to a cooling tower, often by gravity. The cooling tower overflow and blow down is discharged to a wastewater treatment facility as part of the plant oily wastewater handling needs. [Pg.2397]

A modular pilot size plant involving coagulation/flocculation, centrifugation, ultrafiltration, and sorption processes was designed and constmeted by Benito et al. [13] for the treatment of oily wastewaters. Empirical equations developed by Shaalan [65] predict the impact of water contaminants on flux decline. These formulae enable decision-making concerning a suitable water pretreatment scheme and also selection of the most appropriate cleaning cycle. [Pg.335]
