Oil drilling applications

Orthoester derivatives (II), prepared by Funkhouser et al. (5) were effective as surfactants and used in oil drilling applications. [Pg.16]

Since 1966 hexanitrostilbene (HNS) and since 1978 triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) are produced commercially (Fig. 1.3). Both secondary explosives show excellent thermal stabilities and are therefore of great interest for the NAVY (fuel fires) and for hot deep oil drilling applications (Fig. 1.3). Especially HNS is known as a heat- and radiation-resistant explosive which is used in heat-resistant explosives in the oil industry. The brisance of HNS is lower than that of RDX, but the melting point of approx. 320 °C is much higher. HNS can directly be prepared from trinitrotoluene through oxidation with sodium hypochlorite in a methanol/THF solution ... [Pg.6]

FKM elastomers are selected when a very good combination of heat resistance and oil resistance must be achieved even at a higher compound cost. FKM is mainly used in sealing applications. There is also some use in downhole oil drilling applications. [Pg.108]

Miscellaneous Commercial Applications. Dimer acids are components of "downweU" corrosion inhibitors for oil-drilling equipment (see Petroleum Corrosion and corrosion inhibitors). This may account for 10% of current dimer acid use (71). The acids, alkyl esters, and polyoxyalkylene dimer esters are used commercially as components of metal-working lubricants (see Lubrication). Dimer esters have achieved some use in specialty lubricant appHcations such as gear oils and compressor lubricants. The dimer esters, compared to dibasic acid esters, polyol esters and poly(a-olefin)s, are higher in cost and of higher viscosity. The higher viscosity, however, is an advantage in some specialties, and the dimer esters are very stable thermally and can be made quite oxidatively stable by choice of proper additives. [Pg.117]

Advanced ceramics have a wide range of application (Figure 5.3). In many cases, they do not constitute a final product in themselves, but are assembled into components critical to the successful performance of some other complex system. Commercial applications of advanced ceramics can be seen in cutting tools, engine nozzles, components of turbines and turbochargers, tiles for space vehicles, cylinders to store atomic and chemical waste, gas and oil drilling valves, motor plates and shields, and electrodes for corrosive hquids. [Pg.78]

While starches are commonly used, they are relatively poor viscosifiers. Acids and bacterial enzymes readily attack the acetal linkages resulting in facile depolymerization. Both formaldehyde and isothiazolones have been used as starch biocides (17). Development of improved high temperature water viscosifiers for drilling and other oil field applications is underway. For the... [Pg.11]

Benzoic acid is also used as a down-hole drilling mud additive where it functions as a temporary plugging agent in subterranean formations. Since this is a secondary oil recovery application, this use is heavily dependent on the price of crude oil. [Pg.55]

PB film is usually made by the blown film process, but also can be cast oil drill lolls. Film applications include food and meat packaging, compression wraps, and hot-fill containers. The material can be formulated to provide a wide range of seal strengths for peelable or easy-opening packaging. [Pg.1335]

The applications of barium compounds are varied and include use as oil-drilling mud. Barium carbonate is sometimes employed as a neutralizing agent for sulfuric acid and, because both barium carbonate and barium sulfate are insoluble, no contaminating barium ions are introduced. The foregoing application is found in the synthetic dyestuff industry. [Pg.70]

The cationic polyelectrolytes, in particular, are versatile and useful materials with applications being found in water treatment, waste treatment, preparation of papers, textiles, oil drilling, plastics and biomedical areas (2). [Pg.61]

The main types of steel grades used for oil drilling and refinery applications are as follows [11] ... [Pg.208]

The properties of the most important LCP fibers are listed in Table 1.2. The key application areas for LCP fibers include hard armor (vehicles, helmets), soft ballistic protection (vests), cut protection (gloves), and a variety of composite uses that include honeycomb structure, pressure vessels, and rubber reinforcement. Ropes and cables find utility in the mooring of huge offshore structures such as oil-drilling platforms and the reinforcement and support of optical cables. LCP fibers also find specialty niche markets such as sails for racing yachts, specialized fishing nets, etc. [Pg.18]

Derivatized starches are obtained by reaction with a-chloroacids, epoxy derivatives or anhydrides in alkaline conditions. In general, they have lower gelatinization temperature, better film-forming properties and tend to give softer gels. Typical products used in oil drilling fluids, adhesives and paper applications are carboxymethylated starches, hydroxypropylated starches, cationized starches and acetylated starches. [Pg.242]

Cellulose sulfate esters with the proper D.S. values are water soluble and have applications such as food thickeners, textile sizes, viscosity modifiers for oil-drilling muds and in pharmaceutical applications. [Pg.55]
