Offshore industry

The use of gas turbines in the petrochemical, power generation, and offshore industries has mushroomed in the past few years. It is to these users and manufacturers of gas turbines that this book is directed. The book will give the manufacturer a glimpse of some of the problems associated with his equipment in the field and help the user to achieve maximum performance efficiency and high availability of his gas turbines.

Recently, some complex geometries were studied as part of the European Community program for MERGE and EMERGE projects and for a joint industry project for the offshore industry. The results of the work should be incor )orated in future discussions of the subject. 

Competence assessment is also required if workers are assigned to new areas of work. In the offshore industry, considerable importance is being attached to the issue of demonstrating competence, following the recommendations of the inquiry that followed the Piper Alpha disaster. 

Cathodic protection and associated instruments have developed in-line with the changing monitoring demands of both the onshore and offshore industries. In particular, for potential and current density measurements, far greater quantities of data are sought and are required to be processed into an easily assimilated form. Thus cathodic protection instrumentation has benefited from an increased association with microprocessor-based data handling and storage systems. 

The principle reference electrodes used in the onshore and offshore industries have remained unchanged. There is a difference between the two with respect to the drivers involved. The Sleipner case is mainly motivated by the Norwegian C02 tax for the offshore industry, whereas the In Salah project has no direct financial driver but is mainly driven by the objective of demonstrating C02 storage on a commercial scale and of gaining experience.

The aluminizing process is a clean operation and the final products (Fig. 23), i. e., aluminum-coated metals, pose no environmental threat. We know today that aluminum can to a large extent replace cadmium as a corrosion-protective coating for work pieces [176]. Since cadmium is applied extensively in automobiles, aviation, on- and offshore industries, aluminum coating, i.e. both the aluminum electroplating process and the resulting coated pieces play an important role in environmental protection. The properties of the electrolytically produced aluminum layers on work pieces for aviation and space technology have been tested [183].

Environmental and coast protection (Druet et al., 1976a), utilization of its energy potential (Svensson, 1981), safety of maritime transport (Quandt, 1980) and tourism and recreational activities (construction of marinas on the coast, search and rescue), and also the military confrontation in the B altic Sea led to an increased interest in sea state characteristics. The offshore industry (exploration and production of natural gas and petroleum), the construction and operation of wind parks, as well as maritime and harbor management (Gayer et al., 1995) are further areas that require both climatological and updated information about a variety of sea state parameters. 

In Norway, a new Accounting Act requires that all companies include environmental information in their annual financial reports from 1999 onwards. They are required to describe any activities with significant environmental impacts as well as the plans and targets implemented to rectify the environmental impacts. In addition, the offshore industry has concluded a negotiated agreement on emission reductions, and a standard for environmental reporting has been developed under the guidance of the Environmental Department.

The book was written with the aim of eombining a deseription of praetieal eorrosion proeesses and problems with a theoretieal explanation of the various types and forms of eorrosion. Relatively mueh attention was paid to the effeets upon eorrosion of faetors sueh as flow, heat, materials seleetion, design, surfaee eonditions, and meehanieal loads and impaets, as well as their roles in the development of different eorrosion forms. The seope of the book is wet eorrosion in general. However, beeause of the vital position of the offshore industry in Norway, several eases and aspeets dealt with are related to marine teehnology and oil and gas produetion.

The aeronautical industry pioneered the use of composites. In 1940 Dr N A de Bruyne and his team constructed an experimental Spitfire fuselage entirely out of unidirectional flax reinforced phenolic prepreg. In the marine industry composites have been used as early as the 1950s. Other successful applications have been found in the chemical, electrical, land transport and offshore industries.
