Octyl maleate

Monoisopropyl citrate, stearyl citrate, triethyl citrate (TEC), butyl and octyl maleates, and fumarates are other important plasticizers for the preparation of stable PC pastes and of low-temperature-resistant PVC products. Triethyl citrate and triethyl acetyldtrate are among the few plasticizers to have good solvency for cellulose acetate. In comparison with diethyl phthalate, with which they are in competition in this application, there are slight but not serious differences in volatility and water sensitivity. The interest in citrate esters is due to a favorable assessment of their physiological properties. They are intended for plastic components used for packaging of food products. [Pg.135]

Butyl and octyl maleates, being unsaturated, are used for copolymerization with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetae, and styrene to provide internal plasticization. [Pg.135]

An example of asymmetric Michael addition carried out in water is the reaction of aromatic thiols with 2-cyclohexanone and maleic acid esters via formation of their crystalline CD complexes [40]. The best chiral inductions (ee ca. 30%, yield 50-93%) were obtained by the combination of the crystalline p-CD complex of benzenethiol with 2-cyclohexenone and octyl maleate, respectively. The opposite combination gives very low ee. [Pg.260]

One of the most common types of emulsion for decorative paint is based on vinyl acetate internally plasticised with about 20 parts of vinyl versatate. Di-butyl or di-octyl maleate or fumarate are also used as plasticising monomers for vinyl acetate, but butyl acrylate or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate are now preferred. Vinyl acetate homopolymers externally plasticised with di-butyl phthalate are still widely used. [Pg.360]

Because the size of the emulsion droplets dictates the diameter of the resulting capsules, it is possible to use miniemulsions to make nanocapsules. To cite a recent example, Carlos Co and his group developed relatively monodisperse 200-nm capsules by interfacial free-radical polymerization (Scott et al. 2005). Dibutyl maleate in hexadecane was dispersed in a miniemulsion of poly(ethylene glycol)-1000 (PEG-1000) divinyl ether in an aqueous phase. They generated the miniemulsion by sonication and used an interfacially active initiator, 2,2 -azobis(A-octyl-2-methyl-propionamidine) dihydrochloride, to initiate the reaction, coupled with UV irradiation. [Pg.183]

Awareness of the problem developed in the mid 1970s when it was found that mineral waters sold in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bottles contained measurable amounts of vinyl chloride monomer. Vinyl chloride is a known carcinogen. The Codex Alimentarius Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants has set a guideline of 1 ppm for vinyl chloride monomer in PVC packaging and 0.01 ppm of the monomer in food (Institute of Food Technologists 1988). Another additive found in some PVC plastics is octyl tin mer-captoacetate or octyl tin maleate. Specific regulations for these chemicals exist in the Canadian Food and Drugs Act. [Pg.341]

Among these heat stabilisers, those containing tin (such as tin mercaptides, and tin carboxylates or maleates) are considered to be the most efficient, and can be used in a wide variety of applications. Metallic tin is harmless but there are suspicions that organotin-compounds can be toxic to the central nervous system and the liver. However, tin stabilisers have a low capacity for migrating, and hence they are still considered to be safe. Tin stabilisers such as methyl and octyl tins are used in food contact applications. For PVC, it is believed that tin stabilisers act as HCl scavengers (generating tin chloride) as well as an antioxidant. Thio-tin compounds (preferred for rigid pipe extrusions and profiles (for window frames) of PVC) may develop an odd odour due to sulfur. [Pg.44]
