Dibutyltin maleate

Gastric hydrolysis was estimated for monomethyltin EHMA, three salts of dibutyltin (maleate, dilaurate, and oxide), and monooctyltin EHMA in 0.07 mol/1 hydrochloric acid solution. Half-lives for hydrolysis were 0.27, 3.5, <0.5, <0.5, and 0.3 h, respectively.

A number of recent studies have been concerned with the effects of commercial heat stabilizers on the photodegradation of PVC. During irradiation at room temperature under air with 253.7-nm light, several dialkyltin dicarboxylates were found to increase the rates of the photooxidation and cross-linking of the polymer (62). However, at 0°C under air in a sunshine weatherometer, photooxidation was shown to be retarded by certain dibutyltin dicarboxylates (63). The latter result was also obtained in experiments involving the use of dibutyltin maleate with irradiation in the (280-400)-nm wavelength region at 38°C under air (50,51,64, 5,66).

Figure 15 illustrates the effect of a 45-minute dwell time on two plastisols containing 75 p.h.r. of DOP with different stabilizer systems. The upper example is a liquid cadmium-barium system and the lower a thiotin-dibutyltin maleate system. The organotin system is obviously the more effective. The leading yellow zone, which is followed by a dark zone, may indicate two different breakdown mechanisms. 

Heat stabilizers protect PVC during processing and applications under heat exposition (Pospisil, 1990c). Typical heat stabilizers consist of barium, calcium or zinc soaps of fatty acids (43, R=Cu-C17, M=Ba, Ca, Zn binary salts Ba/Zn or Ca/Zn are mostly used) and various organotin compounds, e.g. dibutyltin maleate (44) or dioctyltin bis(iso-octylthioglycolate) (45) (PospiSil, 1990c). 

Formulation of poly (vinyl chloride) into sheet goods is often beset with color problems. The kneading process takes place in the presence of dibutyltin maleate to initiate cross-linking reactions. The presence of AMS dimer in the kneading process leads to less yellowing and better thermal stability for the PVC sheet.485... 

Another class of organotin heat stabilizers is the sulphur-free estertins or organotin carboxylates like dibutyltin maleate. Estertins work especially well in out-door applications like transparent and translucent double-walled panels for greenhouses, sidings, and window profiles.
