Systemic infections are those that have microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, yeasts, parasites) spread, usually via the bloodstream, beyond the portal of entry or original site of localized infection to multiple compartments of the body. When infections, either localized or systemic, are accompanied by signs and symptoms of a systemic inflammatory response (fever, rapid pulse, increase in white blood cells) the syndrome is called sepsis. Severe sepsis is defined by the additional occurrence of organ failure (either kidney, liver, brain, lungs), and is a potentially fatal condition (mortality around 50%). Abl tyrosine kinase was first discovered as the oncogene of murine Abelson leukemia virus. Chronic myelogenic leukemia in humans is cause by a chromosome translocation in which a fusion protein is created of Abl tyrosine kinase and a Bcr protein (c Chapter 14). The phosphate esters of nucleosides are the nucleotides, which, in polymerized forms, constitute the nucleic acids of all cells.2 The sugar moieties of nucleosides derived from the nucleic acids have been shown, thus far, to be either D-ribose or 2-deoxy-D-eri/fAro-pentose ( 2-deoxy-D-ribose ). The ribo-nucleosides are constituents of ribonucleic acids, which occur mainly in the cell cytoplasm whereas 2-deoxyribo -nucleosides are components of deoxypentonucleic acids, which are localized in the cell nucleus.3 The nucleic acids are not limited (in occurrence) to cellular components.
