Occupations Great Britain

Social group of the child is determined by whether the father s occupation was manual or non-manual, and social class is a more detailed breakdown of father s occupation, using the Registrar General s classification of occupations (Great Britain Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, 1970). If the father was absent, the mother s occupation determined the child s social group. If the father was not currently employed, the father s last occupation (manual or non-manual) was noted. [Pg.151]

In my opinion, the British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is similar in some aspects to a British version of the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration blended with the US National Safety Council. The HSE s website is comprehensive and easy to use. The HSE s objective is to prevent death, injury and ill-health in Great Britain s workplaces - by becoming part of the solution. The Report of the Robens Committee (1972) represents a watershed in thinking about occupational health and safety in Britain. In May 1970 the then Labour Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity, Barbara Castle, appointed a Committee of Inquiry to undertake a wide-ranging review of health and safety in Great Britain. The Committee was Chaired by Lord Robens and its remit was to examine critically the provision made for the safety and health of persons in the course of their employment (1972, p. xiv) and to consider whether changes were needed and, if so, of what type. Three main factors prompted this enquiry ... [Pg.37]

The overall incidence of mesothelioma is indeed low, which is particularly true for the general population. Recent American data indicate that the incidence of mesothelioma is 14-15 individuals per million population for men (Connelly et al. 1987). This amounts to approximately 1750 male individuals per year in the United States. In women, the risk is approximately 2 subjects per million population and year, which amounts to 250 individuals per year. The incidence of mesothelioma shows a birth cohort effect, i.e., the incidence of mesothelioma increases with age but diminishes by 70 years of age. In the period between 1960 to 1983, Canada witnessed an increase in mesotheliomas from 0.5 per million to 2 per million in men (Connelly et al. 1987). No increase in female cases of mesothelioma was observed in the same period. A similar pattern of the development of the incidence of mesothelioma has occurred in Great Britain 0ones et al. 1985). The fact that the incidence in male individuals has been increasing in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, while that for female individuals has substantially remained the same, confirms that occupational exposure is the primary cause of the observed increase in the incidence of mesotheliomas (Connelly et al. 1987). [Pg.240]
