The protocols in this unit are divided into (1) observational assessments, and (2) manipulative tests. Each protocol is further subdivided into specific tests or endpoints (Table 5.4). These various end points may be combined into a battery of tests for neurobehavioral screening. Most or all of these protocols or end points should be used in the context of a broad neurobehavioral test battery, whereas judicious selection of specific end points may be appropriate for more focused neurological testing. Originally developed by Gad [4], Moser [7], and Moscardo [8], the functional observational battery provides excellent detailed descriptions of the method using rats, the most common species used. 

This section provides observational assessments used to characterize neurological functions, a description of the behaviors being observed, and possible ranking scales to be used, where applicable. The observed behaviors are innate, that is, they do not need to be taught or shaped. Thus, observations require little or no interaction between the observer and the subject, with the possible exception of holding the rat. Because the observer makes judgments regarding these behaviors, the assessments are subjective. 

The reliability parameter was examined for the control networks of the type B, C and D. Distinct diversification of the local observation assessment was found, depending on direction in which they influence coordinates. In the type B networks the average value of Zx was 0.17 for d=100m and 0.28 for d=200m, while the average value of Zy was equal 0.0 for all observed distances. In the type C the average value of Zx was 0.33 and of Zy - 0.0, when in the type D -respectively 0.33 and 0.50. So only the networks of the type D fulfil the reliability postulate. 

In addition to direct observations, assessment of bacterial viability in the electrode compartments was made by diluting and culturing aliquots from each compartment. Such experiments revealed that bacterial concentration in both the cathode and anode compartments decreased in an exponential fashion with the time of application of potential.
