O-toluene-sulfonamides

Side-chain oxidations of alkyl aromatic compounds to aromatic carboxylic acids by electrogenerated and regenerated chromic acid have been studied extensively in the case of saccharin formation from o-toluene sulfonamide This... [Pg.14]

Saccharin (1) Toluene + chlorosulfonic acid - o.toluene sulfonate + NH3 - o.toluene sulfonamide + KMn04 (2) Anthranilic acid + NaN02 + N2S2 — o.sodium benzoate disulfide + methanol + Cl2 - o.sulfonyl chloride methyl benzoate + NH3... [Pg.1061]

Saccharin is produced by the oxidation of o-toluene sulfonamide by potassium permanganate in a solution of sodium hydroxide. Acidification of the solution precipitates saccharin, which is then dissolved in water at 50°C and neutralized by addition of sodium hydroxide. Rapid cooling of the solution initiates crystallization of saccharin sodium from the liquors. [Pg.642]

Among other plasticizers, o- and p-toluene-sulfonamides are used to improve the processibility of urea and melamine resins, and cellulose-based adhesives. For the same reason, N-ethyl-o-toluenesulfonamide and N-ethyl-p-toluenesulfonamide are used for polyamides, casein, and zein. [Pg.136]

Other polymers that can provide delayed-tack adhesives include styrene-butadiene copolymers, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, and polyamides. Solid (crystalline) plasticizers for these adhesives include dicyclohexyl phthalate, diphenyl phthalate, A-cyclohexyl-p-toluene sulfonamide, and o/p-toluene sulfonamide. Adhesives with different heat-activation temperatures could be obtained because of the range of melting points available. Delayed-tack adhesives have a large number of uses, such as coating paper for labels on bread packages, cans, etc. [Pg.79]

It may be prepared (21) by treating toluene with chlorosulfonic acid and separating the o- and p-toluene-sulforylchloride. The o-compound is then treated with ammonia and the resulting sulfonamide is oxidized with potassium permanganate in alkaline solution yields a salt of o-sulfamoylbenzoic acid. The free acid which is liberated on acidification loses water spontaneously to give saccharin. [Pg.502]

M e t h y 1 - i s o t h i azo 1 - 3 (2 //) - thiones 97 were prepared from the corresponding 2-methyl-isothiazol-3(2/7)-ones in toluene and oxalylchloride (81USP4281136, see also Schemes 55, 66). They reacted with sodium iV-chlorobenzenesulfonamide in ethanol and chloroform to produce sulfimides 98, sulfonamides 99 as well as sulfinamidinates 100 (96PS203, Scheme 32). The stability of the inner salts 98-100 increased from 98 < 99 < 100. [Pg.233]

Plasticizers maybe added to nylon to lower the melting point and to improve toughness and flexibility particularly at low temperatures. A plasticizer used commercially is a blend of o- and p-toluene ethyl sulfonamide. [Pg.456]
