The Tatoray process, which was developed by Toray Industries, Inc., and is available for Hcense through UOP, can be appHed to the production of xylenes and benzene from feedstock that consists typically of toluene [108-88-3] either alone or blended with aromatics (particularly trimethylbenzenes and ethyl-toluenes). The proton adds to the aromatic ir electron complex of o-ethyl-toluene to form a charged structure that is the same for isomerization and dealkylation. The next step depends on whether the positive charge is stabilized on the ethyl group by nearby alumina sites in the micropore or if it is dispersed over the entire molecule. Stabilization of the ethyl car-bonium ion by a negative charge from a nearby alumina tetrahedron results in a stabilized transition state that favors dealkylation.

The isomer with isopropyl groups in the narrower center of the assembly appears energetically inaccessible. But with p-ethyl-toluene the most favored isomer places the ethyl groups in the center and, unaccountably, the unsymmetrical isomer represents only a few percent of the mixture as shown in Fig. 12, although it is statistically favored.
