Nonwoven fabrics fabric durability

Media made from woven or nonwoven fabrics coated with a polymeric film, such as Primapor, made by SCAPA Filtration, and Gore-Tex, made by W. L. Gore and Associates, combine the high retentivity charac teristics of a membrane with the strength and durability of a thick filter cloth. These media are used on both continuous and batch filters where excellent filtrate clarity is required. [Pg.1707]

In the case of nonwoven fabrics, a reduction in pore size is achieved by compressing the fibres into a more dense structure (loads up to 300decaNm" may be necessary) and, by selection of the appropriate conditions, a more durable (Fig. 3.31) surface can also be obtained through partial fusion of the surface fibres. With woven fabrics, on the other hand, some deformation of the yams may be necessary to achieve the optimum filtration properties. Clothing products, which include articles worn by both nursing staff and patients, have no specific requirements other than comfort and durability. In isolation wards and intensive care units, disposable protective clothing is worn to minimize cross infection. Ruorocarbon treatment generally improves the penetration resistance of porous fabrics, both woven and nonwoven, to liquids and particles. The fluorocarbon reduces die differences between the resistances of 100% cotton and various cotton/polyester blends. Durable press finishes reduce penetration resistance to liquids.
