Laminate coatings

Other Durable Applications. Other durable appHcations such as interlinings and coating/laminating substrates do not appear to offer much near-term opportunity for growth for spunbonded fabrics. In interlinings, however, spunlaced nonwovens have received wide acceptance because of the outstanding drape and softness previously unavailable from any other fabric. 

The polysulphides are frequently used in casting mixes and to a less extent in coating, laminating and adhesive applications. Their value in casting and encapsulation lies mainly with their low curing shrinkage and flexibility in the cured state. Their tendency to corrode copper and the somewhat inferior electric insulation properties of the blends does lead to certain limitations. 

Epoxy resins are relatively expensive, but despite this, they are firmly established in a number of important applications. These include adhesives, protective coatings, laminates, and a variety of uses in building and construction. 

Melamine is supplied in bags, carlots, and truckloads. Some of the melamine uses are surface coatings, laminates, paper treating, molding compounds, textile treating, wood adhesives, and other uses such as ceiling tiles,... 

Accelerated aging testing and dynamic mechanical analysis were used to evaluate the stability of coated laminates. Testing results are provided in Table 2.

Use Corrosion and chemical resistance, fire-retardant, castings, marine gel coats, laminating, and molding. 

Use High-temperature coatings, laminates and composites for aerospace vehicles, ablative materials, oil sealants and retainers, adhesives, semiconductors, valve seats, bearings, insulation for cables, printed circuits, magnetic tapes (high- and low-tem-perature-resistant), flame-resistant fibers, binders in abrasive wheels. 

Use Adhesives, waxes, tackifiers, plasticizers, surface coatings, laminating agents, cable filling compositions, lubricating oils.

Antioxidants are used to protect the finishes and the treated fibres from attack by oxygen and heat. Many antioxidants are used in rubber, plastic, composite, paint and coating/laminating materials. Hindered phenols are widely used as antioxidants, especially in the food industry. Two representative ones are butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, 2,6-di-Z-butyl-4-methyl-phenol as shown in Fig. 5.9a) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA, a mixture of 2- and 3-Z-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole, shown in Fig. 5.9bl and b2, respectively). 

A strip pack using an aluminium foil/low density polyethylene laminate was used for a tablet containing volatile oil constituents. Delamination between foil and film subsequently occurred as the volatile constituents passed through the polyethylene and softened the adhesive bond. It was not known that the bond was an adhesive at the time, and subsequently an extrusion-coated laminate provided a satisfactory answer.
