Under low-dose conditions, forest ecosystems act as sinks for atmospheric pollutants and in some instances as sources. As indicated in Chapter 7, the atmosphere, lithosphere, and oceans are involved in cycling carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and other elements through each subsystem with different time scales. Under low-dose conditions, forest and other biomass systems have been utilizing chemical compounds present in the atmosphere and releasing others to the atmosphere for thousands of years. Industrialization has increased the concentrations of NO2, SO2, and CO2 in the "clean background" atmosphere, and certain types of interactions with forest systems can be defined. [Pg.116]

In many applications, such as the analysis of mercury in open ocean seawater, where the mercury concentrations can be as small as 10 ng/1 [468,472-476], a preconcentration stage is generally necessary. A preliminary concentration step may separate mercury from interfering substances, and the lowered detection limits attained are most desirable when sample quantity is limited. Concentration of mercury prior to measurement has been commonly achieved either by amalgamation on a noble-metal metal [460,467, 469,472], or by dithizone extraction [462,472,475] or extraction with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate [475]. Redfield (1934), who analyzed the major elemental content of many samples of mixed plankton (phytoplankton and zooplankton) caught in nets towed through the surface ocean. They compared the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus composition of these collections to concentration profiles of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), NOs, and P04 throughout the water column. This pioneering research demonstrated that these three elements are continually redistributed in the ocean by selective removal into plankton cells and their remains (i.e., fecal pellets), which are then efficiently respired as they sink through the marine water column. [Pg.45]

Until recently, most attention was focused on the so-called primary pollutants of fossil fuel combustion that are harmful to human health oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, carbon monoxide, suspended particles (including soot), heavy metals, and products of incomplete combustion.
